In the wake of Mercury's announcements, comes this from OMC...
The Bombardier Recreational Products Boats and Outboard Engines Division, Vice President, General Manager, Roch Lambert has announced that their manufacturing strategy is the heart of the plan to secure a bright and successful future for their brands - Evinrude, Johnson® and the state-of-the-art FICHT® Ram Injection technology.
Bombardier will begin operations this fall in their new facility located in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, located about 20 miles south of Milwaukee and 35 miles north of Waukegan. They will offer its customers a complete line of the best engines money can buy. The processes and functions to be performed at the new facility include final engine testing, production line emissions testing, engine assembly and final assembly. It is anticipated that the staff at the new facility will grow to 1,000 in the first year.
The new 32-acre site offers more than 408,000 square feet of manufacturing space and a 60,000 square-foot office building. It is an excellent and modern physical plant, very well suited to the needs and manufacturing systems and equipment that will be installed over the next several months.
The new facility is strategically located to be close enough to ensure continuity with product development operations and dealer and customer support services will remain in Waukegan. However, the former OMC Waukegan manufacturing facility will not reopen, nor will manufacturing locations in Calhoun, Georgia and Burnsville, North Carolina.
Manufacturing operations will resume at the Spruce Pine, North Carolina facility and Andres, North Carolina. "We'll continue to operate the Delavan, Wisconsin facility, where we product electrical components for engines with Ficht Ram injection technology," noted Roch Lambert, and "we'll continue operating the OMEX facility in Mexico and look forward to reopening operations in Asia. The overall footprint for distribution will remain as is pending further evaluation."
The new manufacturing strategy will result in many competitive advantages, including faster cycle time, which will enable Bombardier to implement more efficient build-to-order systems. We'll achieve world-class quality by introducing processes that identify and correct errors and defects early in the process to ensure a quality finished product. The new facility will be closer to many of the suppliers, with 80 percent of the suppliers located within 150 miles of Sturtevant. This location will reduce the amount of incoming material shipping, lowering inventory and related costs through improved forecasting systems and our logistical efficiency will improve dramatically.
These competitive advantages enhance our ability to create world-class products that will form the basis of a mutually rewarding relationship with our dealer and distributor partners.
Since the announcement in February to purchase the OMC engine assets, we've moved quickly, but carefully to make decisions that will form a strong foundation for the rebirth of Evinrude and Johnson brands and the state-of-the-art FICHT Ram Injection technology.
