View Full Version : Take a Veteran fishing...
It's Memorial Day weekend.
Say "thank you".
Take a Sailor, Soldier, Airman, Marine, or Veteran fishing with you. If it's a Veteran, the older they are, the better.

Hans,
Could I ask you, or your fellow Navy guys, what it means for a pilot to "screw the pooch"!? I have heard this for a hundred years and assumed it ment the pilot augered in, through his/her misbehavoir, but was safe. The converse - the pilot augered in but went with the plane???? The "blackshoes" around here don't know and we have no aviators (pilots) or airdales. Can you help?

Sorry,Ranger,I don't remember that expresion; and I was an airdale.......but that was forty some years ago.We did have planes then, but some of them were prop jobs. Maybe someone from the NEW modern navy can shed some light on the subject.
For Hans: you are a rare one. Not to many people ever heard of the Bonnie Dick. The size would barely make a good lifeboat compared to the new flatops.......lots of fond memories!

It seems that is the answer I get all the time. I'm wondering if it is a figment of my imagination!? Although, the first time I heard it was at the Naval Air Station in Rota, Spain. I was there TDY from Madrid (Torrejon AB) to fix an "Electra" around 1970. When I asked, there, no one would say. Is this a National Defense issue or what? :7

It just means the pilot did something that most likly will result in his (or her, nowadays) removal from flight status, or even worst, injury or death.
When we where launching bombing raids into Iraq round the clock (flex deck) One of our pilots (F-14's) blew a tire on take off. The Airboss (God himself) told him to circle around and land. Well this hotdog decided to pull the old "I can't hear you, my radio is busted" trick. Well as soon as he landed the Boss came down to the deck with a couple of AE's (wire chasers) to check out this radio problem. Needless to say the pilot broke down and ammited to his goof. Didn't see much of him on the flight deck after that. That is "screwing the pooch".

I personally would like to thank all the veterans on this page and veterans across this nation for the sacrifice for their country. I was fortunate enough to miss the terrible effects of war, but I do have the utmost respect for those who served and died for us. I think most younger people today forget how it was growing up when this country was at war. God bless and God bless America.

crash,
Thanks! I was having trouble associating the expression with the "action" that warranted the directive. At times the pilot was safe and then there were the "others" and it confused me. Now that you have shed light on it I can see that it is a universal tag-line for a PILOT when they mess up, really bad! Thanks.
By the way WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? Haven't noticed your handle in here for a good while.

INDIAN LAKE - A pier designed to be safe for fishing from a wheelchair has its origins in a trip to
a Veterans Administration Hospital about five years ago.
John Emrick, a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, had a six-month stay at the hospital for
surgery. While there, Emrick met many fellow veterans who rarely got out of the hospital and had
few people visit him. When he left the hospital he decided to start bringing those patients who could
walk to Indian Lake for fishing.
Now, after three years of planning and fund raising, construction of a fishing pier designed for
disabled people begins this week at Indian Lake.
A ground breaking ceremony is slated for 11 a.m. Thursday in Lakeview Harbor.
"Everything is going to be safe," Emrick, organizer of the project, said after describing the pier's
railing, wheelchair stops and fishing pole holders.
Twice a year Emrick brings a crew of veterans from the hospital to the lake. They spend about five
hours fishing and socializing before returning to the hospital. The local Aunt Millie's Restaurant
provides lunch for the veterans and the state park provides the fishing gear.
"The veterans we've brought up love it," Emrick said.
But about three years ago veterans at the hospital who were confined to wheelchairs began
complaining that Emrick wasn't taking them fishing. There really wasn't any place for them to fish,
Emrick said.
Emrick said he began talking with state park officials to get a pier accessible to disabled people, but
was told the state didn't have the funds for it. So Emrick and others began developing plans on their
own. It took two years to get state approval, he said.
Construction of the project will cost about $30,000 Emrick said. Local organizations such as the
Moose Lodge, Eagles, and Tamplin Trust Fund donated to the project. The state has agreed to plant
trees and supply picnic tables to the pier area, he said.
The pier will be located just off Old Field Beach, on state Route 235, Emrick said. The 10-foot
wide pier will extend 16 feet out onto the lake where it will bisect a 20-foot section of pier, forming
a "T" shape.
The pier will be open to any disabled people wanting to fish. Emrick said he expects the pier to get
lots of use. The local Shriners organization often brings disabled people from Springfield to the lake
for fishing, he said.
