View Full Version : Planer Boards
Wanted to build my own boards.Plans call for redwood which
i can not find local. What do you think? Can i use another wood?
Thanks for the help.
Try White Oak. A bit pricy but will last a really long time. If you can't find White Oak, try Popler. It works well too. Just remeber to seal the popler real well. Bob

The redwood was suggested because it won't rot and is quite buoyant. Cedar might be a decent alternative but redwood shold not be hard to find in a better lumber yard, not a home store.
Popler sealed will have to be weighted to bite hard enought to work properly. The redwood will obsorb water and should not be sealed up or painted. If you feel you need to colorize for others to see them paint only the top half, or use flags.
I've built a pair of boards out of cedar. They work well. The only thing you have to remember with cedaris it is high in natural oil content and must be primed with a primer that states it is suitable for cedar, before finish coating.

Any reputable lumber yard should be able to get you some redwood. How ever, Ceder should work just as well...
Sure would like to get a copy of some plans to build a set,if any one has some could they please e-mail them to me.
Thanks very much
