Does anybody have any experiences with the SmartCraft gauges for the Optimax. Are the neccassary or just a connvienence item. I really don't care about knowing everything about the engines performance. Do you have to tinker with them all the time? Are the sensors already on the engine from the factory? Thanks for your help!

No you don't have to mess with them all the time. They are worth the extra money just to keep up with whats going on in your motor. Noticeing your fuel pressure is low or something and fixing it before a pump goes and leaves you stranded on or before your big fishing trip. It kinda nice to be able to do things like that. Don't think I'll ever own a another motor without them or something similar.

I have the smart craft guages on a 200 optimax. It is very handy to have all of the functions in one guage. Also if you troll, the ability to lock in a RPM can be handy. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Another option is to use the Merc SC1000 SmartCraft monitor gauge. Its a single gauge that will digitally display RPM's, gallons used, gallons/hour, trim angle, engine hours, volts, water temp, water pressure, etc. I think they run about $250 with the harness and they are easily installed in a standard 2 1/8" cut out in the dash; the harness simply plugs into the motor. I've used them on my last two boats with Opti's and I like knowing exactly how my motor is performing. Good Luck. JC
arethe smart gauges(and similiar ones) only good on the optis?
i have a 2001 200 efi and would love to have them.
can a person with decent mechanical skills in stall?
I am pretty sure the gauges are only for the Digital motors which would be the Opti.
They work on more than the Opti's. I know they work on the 2002 2-stroke EFI's. Look for my post from about a month ago. I had a list of what they work with. Does you motor have the ECM555? If so, it probably will work.
