I'm considering the purchase of a Pinpoint motor but have never fished with one. I know, for instance, that they track depth but what do they do if your fishing a large flat where the depth does not change? Also how much of a depth change does it take for them to adjust direction?

larrym, Ihope someone answers your question. I to am debating on buying a Pinpoint. I am also wondering if it is worth the extra money for the shore and creek track Iwould think that they would be good options.

If you're on a large flat where the depth doesn't change, then you steer it just like you'd steer a conventional trolling motor.
As far as staying on depth, you can program the motor to be as aggressive as you like to holding an exact depth. Now your first reaction might be that you'd always want it to hold precisely on a given depth and react immediately to a depth change. But there are some situations where you'd want it to tolerate a momentary depth change, like when following a very ragged boulder strewn breakline. Obviously you'd not want it to steer around every 6" change in depth caused by a rock.
Basically this setting determines how long the unit tolerates being off it's set depth or how drasticly the depth changes, before steering to recover. In practice you'll have favorite settings of this value, based on the type of bottom structure you're following.
For the fellow who asked about shore track and creek track -- I don't fish reservoirs, so the creek track feature isn't useful to me, but when working a shoreline the shore track is great. You can concentrate on your fishing and leave the driving to PinPoint.

Hans,
How do you adjust the sensitivity of the unit for tracking bottom?
I have one of these pinpoint trolling motors, but have lost the instructions.
Thanks for your help.

Tom,
The feature you're looking for is Tracking ASC. Set it higher for more agressive tracking, lower for less.
Just a thought/comment here, you should place a call to the Pinpoint repair center in Minnesota and see how swamped they are... My partner bought a Pinpoint last year. He ran it for the second half of the season. The first time out this year it freaked out and has been at the shop since (a couple of weeks now). The guy at the repair center said they have had very poor deliveries of parts from Mercury to service the Pinpoints. He ordered a cable drive motor this week and the Pinpoint is going on the auction block when it comes back from the repair center... Just wanted to give you a heads up into the situation from someone who is currently involved in the "process".
Best Regards,

On the opposite side mine is now 1 year old and has worked perfectly from day one. Just like cars and other trolling motors most work but every now and then you will get one that does not no matter who makes it it's usually the one's that don't work that you hear about

I'm into my fourth season with a Pinpoint 3700/7520 combination. They've been trouble free, and I can't imagine going back to fishing without them in the boat.
SET the hook!!!

It's called ASC or Automatic Speed Control. Your motor comes from the factory with a setting of 3. There are settings from 1 to 5. 1 being the least aggressive, and 5 being the most aggressive. I pretty much only use 5 when I'm using the Pinpoint to steer while trolling with my kicker.
