View Full Version : Spooling Fireline
I will be spooling 14 lb. Fireline on a Diawa 27LC linecounter reel. What's the best procedure for connecting to mono backing and how much mono backing do I use? Should I use the whole 300yd spool of Fireline too? Thanks

Give REW the credit for this response, he answered this ? a few weeks ago and I'm posting what he said. This works for filling 2 reels. Start off spooling on as much fireline as you will use (I would use the whole spool because I use long leads but if my leads were shorter I would use less) then finish filling reel with mono. Watch your line counter and know the total amount of line you spooled of both mono and fireline. Now fill your 2nd reel from the one you just filled. Mono will go on 1st with the fireline following. Now you know how much mono/fireline will be required for next reel. Good Fishing.
Now that's using your head REW! I have the same reels and line and had the same question. Thanks, EJ

A couple of suggestions. I have trolled with Fireline for 4 years with Penn 109 level wind reels. I put 300 ft. on each reel. That is plenty of line for trolling. Next year reverse the line and get two years of life.
If you have a line counter reel fill the spool with your backing and then remove the proper lamount of backing. Example - I use 10lb which is 4 lb mono dia. So, if my backing is 8 lb mono I remove 150 ft. of the backing and wind on 300 ft. of the Fireline. Works great for me.

Excellent ideas on figuring out how much to spool. One question that didn't get answered was how to attach the line-- I'd recommend back-to-back uni knots. If you're worried about the knot coming apart, apply some super glue also.

The use of two reels for spooling works very well, BUT, don't use your line counter to measure the fireline you put on the first reel. Due to the small diameter of the spool spindle, the counter won't be giving you anything close to the same reading as after you reverse the lines on the second reel. Most accurate is still a 100' tape measure (I know its a pain). The good part is, remember your numbers when you transfer, and you don't need to measure for the second reel. Good Luck
