am running break in on a 2002 F50 and am concerned that this motor is not going to troll slowly enough to pull harnesses. gps says 3.5 mph at idle, i'm looking for 1.5 to 1.8 at idle. should i be shopping for a kicker? or can an idle adjustment be made to get under 2.0? thanks!

i have the f80 and i run down to about 2.3 gps so i would think your f50 would maybe get a little better than that after break in. but 3.5 sounds really high so if it doesn't get better after break in i would take it in for an idle adjustment. My f80 idles at about 700rpm
Mmillelacs,
What are your getting for rpm's at WOT.
I just finished breaking my 2002 F80 and am only getting 5200 rpms with 10 gals of fuel.

ps: after break-in i switched to valvoline 10w30 all synthetic oil and have used it since -this gave me about 100 to 150 more rpm

Do you have a tach? Adjust your idle RPM per the book first, then go from there.See if you can back it down a bit but still keep it running. However,I wouldnt bother trying it until after you are well broken in and loosened up a bit. Sometimes a new motor will require just a skosh higher rpm setting to get a good idle and keep it running. One other thing that helped me on my F40,was a lower pitch prop. It will rob you of a few mph at topend (watch that tach not to over rev! ) but it will slow you down at trolling speed too. Also, trim your motor ALL the way down when trolling. It will create some extra drag which also helps slow you down.

May be a whole season of use before it will be loose enough to try and back the rpm down and still keep it running. So if no success yet after break-in,dont get too frustrated right now.

You can also slow the boat down by trimming the motor up a bit. The prop will get less "bite" and should allow you to troll slow enough. If that doesn't work, get a drift sock, lots cheaper than a kicker.
