View Full Version : Blister Growths on Walleyes??

A few weeks ago while fishing Ottertail for Opener, my partner caught a fish that had pale white "blisters" all over the side and meat of the tail. We thought it was a fluke and released it without handling it. But, while fishing in Canada this last weekend, one of the guys in my boat caught another walleye that had the same pale white growths on its cheek and side. Any one have an idea what this is or what causes it. Is this something of concern that I should be reporting to the DNR?

Oh Ish! You ate it? :o :9 ?????
I could not bring my self to boat either one. Funny thing is there were both about 14"-15" and acted normal in strike and fight.
I just did not want to bing 'em in.

I eat walleyes all the time with big blisters that cover 'em from head to tail. I have never experienced any health related problems, but I do have an urge to get rid of my Lund and buy a glass boat. Hey, now that I think of it maybe these things ARE effecting my brain! I better stop now before I really go nuts and buy a Yamaha.

Don't release them, it can be transmitted to other fish, in the Detroit River there's seems to be two kinds, one affecting the lynph nodes, appearing as blisters on the front fins and the other
a fungus thats can be anywhere but appears to be from fish that have been handled, two of the worst ones I have seen have been tagged fish, the protective coating on the fish may have been removed during the tagging process,or people catching and releasing them,,I certainly wouldn't eat any fish with the meat affected,,,,

I think there is info on this on the MN DNR web site.
I know what it is called but darned if I can spell it right now. It will not hurt you and the meat is not effected by the growths.
It is a increasing problem that may be related to phosphates in the water that stimulate the growth of this condition. Like I said there is more informed info on the DNR site if interested.

Not sure of the name but,,,,it's just a virus they can get. It comes and goes. DNR Shock boat had a few in the tank once and said it's not a problem.

Just curious, but I know thats its a cancer on the ones in the "armpit" of the fish,I contacted MiDNR and they were kind and patient enough to explain it to me ,still it bothers the heck out of me,any intel I get I will pass on,,
I JUST CAUGHT ONE LIKE THAT IN LAKE ERIE. WE DECIDED TO KEEP IT AND BROUGHT IT IN TO SHOW SOMEONE. WHILE IN THE FISH HOUSE WE SAW A MAN FROM THE DNR. HE SHOWED US A WRITE UP HE HAD ON THIS CONDTION AND SAID IT WAS OK TO KEEP AND EAT. SO FAR SO GOOD. PEPE
