Hello all, I was wondering if yo would like to suggest some lakes or rivers in Minnesota to try for a trip in the fall? Most likely be my dad, uncle, maybe my brother, and me going. I was thinkin maybe a week trip. Maybe even hire a guide for one day. Also I was wondering if you new any resorts to look at that wouldnt cost an arm and a leg becuase I dont have a job that I make that much money doing since im still a kid.

don't forget the bwca...some of my best camping/fishing was done up there...tons of short trips...good walleye/smallmouth/northern fishing...requires some portaging to several lakes ...some are easy...some difficult....great place to visit...price is right....steve

I would recomend going to MilleLacs Lake. The fall fishing is great,if you go out of the west side theres Kathio State Park which is beautiful and camping costs about $10-16 dollars a night last time I stayed there. From there I would take a Launch trip on one of Eddys Lake MilleLacs Resorts charter boats (best on the lake). They run about $20 dollars for a 4 hour trip to the hotspots. This includes the boat, guide, rods&reels, tackle and bait.Plus you can bring on your own cooler with food and beverage of your choice. You can have a great time without spending alot of money and fish with someone who knows the lake.Have fun!

Mille Lacs is great, but tends to get nuts in the fall(most the reefs resemble light aiport landings). The Cass Lake chain is very productive in the fall without all the boats. Several resorts and campgrounds(most are reasonable). If you fish one of the smaller lakes in the chain(Kitchi, Pike Bay)you won't have to sit on shore if the wind howls.

Best of luck!

Slick2526, ya gotta head to Leech Lake! Check out the resorts over on Agency Bay or Steamboat Bay. Both offer protection if the winds kick up and easy access to the best parts of the lake.

As far as a guide, Both Murphy (Murph) and Joe Carlson (Grampa Joe) frequent this board and guide out on Leech. Great guys that can hook you up but get in touch soon since Leech is such a great fall lake and they book up fast.

Here are some sites to check out.

I'll agree with Borch and AquaMan. Both Leech and Cass offer some truly excellent diversified fishing (both have Muskies). I'll be fishing both later this summer.

PS: Many resorts have a 20% "off season" discount. Some start August 18th, some start after Labor Day.

I would second Mille Lacs. What time during the fall? I spend most weekends of the summer there and could probably take you out or give you pointers one day. Email me if you want more info.

Hello! I suggest a cabin at Leech Lake and a day trip or two to Longville area lakes such as Little Boy or Wabedo. These lakes also offer a decent "Plan B" if Leech gets too rough. Perhaps you can stop at Mille Lacs for a shift or two on the way up or back from Leech.

I agree with aquaman and borch the cass chain has alot of different fishing opportunities. I've been going there going on 15
years now at all times of the spring/summer/fall and have had good
fishing. Good luck....Dave

I agree but in reverse. I would stay at Island Lake by Park Rapids. Nice small lake with walleye and good size sunfish and crappies for the kids. Also a nice beach. Then I would take a couple of trips up to Leech. I would do it this way around as you can always get on Island, but you could have a whole week on Leech where you can't get on the water and the resorts at Island are more reasonable.

At Brindley Harbor Resort on Leech Lake you can just about always get out on the water -- perhaps going by canal (Roosevelt) into Agency Bay and then into the Narrows and on to Walker Bay. Very few days lost at the right resort location.

However, I don't think Leech can be classified as an inexpensive destination. The prices are reasonable in my estimation, but much higher than found on smaller lakes in the Alex area or even around Brainerd.

A great fall trip destination is Lake of the Woods, Rainy River area...Plenty of resorts and campgrounds moderatly priced...The walleyes really get going on the Rainy in Sept and Oct. and there is excellent grouse hunting close by. There is also Pheasant Hunting on Private Preserves available too...Fall trips in this area offer some of the best Walleye fishing in the World along with many more outdoor opportunities...Need to know more, drop me an e-mail.

I agree with the viking... Although all the destinations are listed in this post offer great fishing in the fall,(or anytime of the year for that matter), Lake of the Woods(Rainy river), is your best bet for a good bite. Its also your best bet if you would like the chance at a true trophy class walleye. there are many resorts to choose from and guides are available. If you would like some suggestions and phone numbers e-mail me and I would be happy to give you some...

Hi slick check out nest lake Spicer Mn, Its a small lake so you don't have to worry about going 10 miles across the lake to catch fish, I've been going there for 5 years now and always got fish, My favorite resort there is Island view. www.islandviewresort-nestlake.com

If you want big fall walleyes, and lots of them, then Rainy Lake is the place. There are several full service resorts just east of Ranier, MN. that can accomodate you, or try a houseboat. Lake of the Woods has lots of fish, but most of the time you will have to fish with the crowd. On Rainy you can get away from most of the traffic.
