View Full Version : Best knot for snelling hook
I have been making my own crawler harnesses with used up bought ones and have been using the "uni-knot" method with pretty good luck.I have tried the more complex method listed next to the uni-knot method on the Andes fishermen knot guide, but must be doing something wrong with getting the line back through the six loops.
What have you found to be the best method of snelling hooks on a harness? Should I stick to the uni-knot or is the more complex one stronger and worth the hassel? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Mark.

I use the hook snell knot with good results. It takes a little practice but once you get used to it you can tie it easily enough. The only problem that I have had is using some of the smaller hooks. It can be hard to get the line thru the eye twice. Go to Matagordabay.com/knots.htm. They have diagrams of knots there. I also reccomend that you don't use too light of line for the leader. You can break the line at a knot on a snag with 8lb or lighter line.
Thanks Larry
Great site, I like the animated knots!

I tie a perfect snell with the line only passing through the eye one time. I was taught by someone else and I have taught two of my friends. There's no way I could explain in writing although I wish I could. Sorry.

Theres only one snell knot and its the snell which is basically a improved clinch knot which is snugged around the hook shaft below the eye and thru it only once with mulitiple hooks you tie the front hook first and tie back, spacing and hook siding (whether or not all hooks end up in line) is a trick with harnesses. Try it with as little as 2, and I perfer 3 loops on the shaft, 6 looks neat knot strenght after 2 loops is basically the same.
