What is the best setup to use when drifting on the st. clair river. I have been using green harnesses with silver blades and a 2 oz. bottom bouncer, but i am having limited success.

Hey RJ...Great fishery over there...It is where I cut my walleye teeth. Few folks know that this is the other place the Detroit River "eyes" go if they don't peel back to Erie....Many head up this way and end up in Saginaw Bay. My best days have been drifting down from the first bouy in the lake to the Blue Water Bridge. I use egg sinkers, usually 1 oz unless there is a NE wind and the river is flying. Then I step it up to a 1.5...Lindy no-snags work great over there as well due to Zeebs. Colors vary a lot but you're on the right track... Let me know how you do eh?? Mark

Mark,
I might be heading over there on saturday, but i am positive that i will be over there on sunday. Usually when i fish there i catch a lot of fish between 18-24 inches. Do u ever catch any walleye there around 10 lbs

I'd like to jump in here. I usually like to launch in either St. Clair or Marine City. I usually troll downstream with BB's or 3 way's. Change up the crawler harness colors alot - though my fav is a chartreuse/orange #3 blade and chartreuse beads. Gold blade/red beads is a go-to also. I see alot of drifters - I don't. Like trolling I guess. Troll the harneses downstream - wire line it upstream. Caught my personal best 8.75 lbs/ 30" in May one year, whippin' tip of russel island. Haven't been yet this year. Love to see the reports though.

My personal best came from the river last Labor Day weekend. 13# 32 inches! She's on the wall in the living room.

I, personally, use a 4 oz. bottom bouncer and either whiplash line or something similar combined with a 36 inch harness. My prefered color is gold hammered blade or plain gold blade with red beads. There are 2 dropoffs south of the Pine River. One is before Lampton powerplant called the "Rapids". The other is going under the high tension lines at Lampton in the middle of the river and dropping down. The bottom will go from 38-40 ft. to 60+ ft. in a mere 200 yards. Great spot!

Going back to why I use the line I do, mono won't give you the hook set needed in that deep of water usually. The braided lines will.
Good Luck!

I got out this weekend at night handlinning. The fish were there but real fussy. I was all over the river just to get a limit. Getting the good eaters now. The weather has been rainy and windy. Did real good Friday nite in that windy weather.
