View Full Version : 12-24 Volt set up

Hate to admitt it.

I replaced the batteries in the boat, I have a 12-24 volt trolling motor and I forgot to draw a diagram how the wiring went. I replaced it the way I thought it was and a spark flew, and my curcit breakers on the battery terminals snapped. I have reset them but only getting 12 volt side of the trolling motor to work. Any help on how the wiring should go on the batteries? I have 2 red wires on 1 black with a jumper red wire. THanks for the help.

I did this with my battery, just recently.
For 24 volts of power you hook them up in series, for 12 volts of power (but 2 batteries) you hook them up in parallel.
Use similar gage wire, as to that which is on the trolling motor. I use 10 gauge. An make sure the batteries are the same type and age.
Parallel:
Link Battery A +ve terminal to Battery B +ve terminal.
Link Battery A -ve terminal to Battery B -ve terminal.
Hook your trolling +ve wire to the Positive of one Battery and the negative of the other battery. Now you will have twice the length of fishing time, but at 12 volts.
Series:
Link Battery A -ve terminal to Battery B +ve terminal.
Hook your trolling motor up to the +ve terminal from Battery A and the -ve terminal from Battery B. Now you will have twice the power (24 volts)

Guessing from the wire colors you have, the Black wire goes on A-, one of the Red wires on A+. The use the jumper to go from A+ > B-. The other red goes on B+.

The black wire will always be ground at the motor. The red from A+ will be at 12V, and the Red from B+ will be at 24V. The trick will be figuring out which red wire is which at the motor. If the motor see 24V when it is switched to 12, it could hurt the motor. Therefor, make sure the motor is not hooked up when conecting the wires and use a volt meter to check the Volts before hooking the motor up.

Good luck

Well this isn't working either way. can't tell the power from the 12 to the 24 volt side of the trolling motor. Before I could. Any suggestions.

How does the motor conect to power? How many wires are at the motor?
