Although the need to use sunscreen becomes more and more necessary, somewhere I have read that sunscreen serves to repel walleye rather effectively. Sort of works like an anti-scent. If that is indeed the case, what suggestions or solutions does anyone have to deal with the problem - that is with having sunscreen on your hands? Much appreciated...ET

Try washing your hands well with Lindys "no scent soap" Any Lindy dealer should have this product available....

You can buy spray-on sunscreen which I find works pretty well. Try Walmart.

ET,

Check this out. I was guiding on Big Winnie about 5-6 years ago and had to apply some sun screen. I'm fair-skinned and do my best to prevent any sun damage, whether it's a sunburn or skin cancer. Anyway, I had two clients in the boat. I offered them my sun screen and only one of them wanted to use any. It was super-hot out and almost calm. Fishing was tough. We were doing a slow drift on Raven's Point along with about two dozen other boats, including about 4-5 other guides. While most boats only caught 4-5 walleyes at best, me and the other guy with the sun screen caught about 30 fish. The client without it had trouble catching fish and probably boated about 4-5. We were all rigged the same. While we were fishing, I motioned to some of the other guide boats to get in line and drift with me. They tried but couldn't catch a thing. It was just me and the other sun screen user that were catching fish quite readily. It was a Coppertone brand and to this day I never have to play any head-games when applying this stuff. I have full confidence that I will catch fish. Bug repellent now, that's another story. Greg Clusiau

Lindy No Scent Soap. I also have a bar of Fishermans soap that my Mom got for me when she went on one of her trips somewhere. Both work very well at removing bug repellant, sun screen, gas/oil and lots of other smells.

Sunscreen - Nutrigena (sp?) makes a SPF30 that is 'sweatproof' and 'rubproof'. Those are the two key words with a fisherman's sunscreen. It won't sweat or rinse off. And it doesn't rub off, like when you wipe some sweat off your brow.

I was in the business of making sunscreens, and it's the perfume that is the problem. Look for the fragrance free type and you will not have a problem. The titanium dioxide, and the U/V absorbers do not effect, or repell any fish bite activity. We at one time used a perfume which is in some fish scents to cover the pasty smell of the powders in it. We tried to sell it to the sportsmen, but could not crack the market. Cost is to much for the return on investment. The product died. Good luck FISHING....Kaz

I saw an SPF30 sunscreen in the form of a stick a little bigger than the size of chap stick at Wal Mart yesterday. I thought cool idea but to rub it on arms, legs, neck & face would take a long time & use about all of it. Now if they would just make it the size of underarm deoderant they would have something there.

During a previous discussion of this topic, someone mentioned the No Ad brand of sunscreen as certainly not repelling fish, and perhaps attracting them. I've used the brand for several years, and don't believe that it keeps them off your bait. And, it's a "one application lasts all day (SPF30 or greater)" sunscreen -- it takes soap and water to get rid of it.
