I traded for a 1984 5.5 tyee with a 90 hp evinrude which i have
to keep charging the battery. Had coffee with the previous owner
he said it did not charge when he had it . talking to the dealer about getting it fixed he said the module is under the fly wheel
and the part would cost me about $200.00 and he would have to order it. The other owner said he ask him if he had fixed it
and he had told him he had ,when i asked him about that he told
me it was to expensive so the other owner did not replace it.
Now i feel that the dealer knew about this when he sold it to me
so i should not have to pay the full value to have it replaced.
and does this sound like to much for this diode system ? I put one on a 115 Johnson older engine for $35.00. Just wondering

First off, I think it's unethical for the dealer to hide the flaw if he knew about it-- but also not particularly surprising. You can try to talk him into at least discounting the price on the repair, but don't count on it.

Before getting too deep in it, it's worth a quick check of the charging system fuse before taking their word that the system is shot. A buddy of mine had the same problem and I found a small inline fuse blown that cured it. I would guess they already checked it, but nowadays you never know...

Good luck!
