Lake erie is awful big, and a lot depends on the area that you are talking about, as well as the time of year. there are an awful lot of very good captains out there. it would be awful hard to say that one is the best. good luck and good fishin.

I would reccomend using some of the good captains that help provide us with fishing reports. Some of the names that come to mind are Rick Smith of the BUSY BEE, Capt. Denny Bergman, and Erie Tournament Troller, aka ETT. Did I forget some others? Please feel free to add some names.DennisW

Thanks Dennis, but I am not a captain. However my brother is. I'll be in Clevevland over the weekend and out of the loop so I'll post his number (419) 221 FISH (3474). Captain Rich Stedke. He fishes the western basin in the spring and Lorain after May. Other good guys are Frank Kittrick, and Bruce Dzuro. For further East (Fairport), I'd reccommend Ron Johnson or Kieth Uncapher. If you have an interest post a follow up and I'll get the appropriate phone number.

I took a charter in 97 it was bad we caught three fish all day while on the radio they were catching them out farther the captain did not want to go out because of the run out. I go there every year and fish with three friends and two boats it's 6 and a half hours one way for us and that's moving we love the lake. Make sure you ask around before you book, and not the charters that are docked in the same marina as the one that you are considering they will talk them up. Or if you have your own boat and decide to go about it on your own be carefull and have a marine radio this like will get nasty very fast. If you want the nme of the charter that I used and would not recommend E- mail me I wiil let you know I don't want to broadcast it out load even though I should!!!!!! Good luck and all of the good charters Im sure will mail you

We have taken several charters over the years & have found that we liked "At Ease" charters out of Luna Pier Hurbor Club. Exit # 6 0ff i 75 in Michigan.
What we like is that they are friendly, will try the hardest to fill the ticketsand will let u set lines etc.
They do troll & had a good season last year.
They have a web page. check it under Lake Erie charters.www.WALLEYECHARTERS.COM PHONE # 734-753-4732. I do know that they book up fast & the bigest % fo their busines is repeat.

I would also have to reccommend Capt. Denny Bergemen. I understand that he is outfitting a brand new 34' Baha Cruisers catamaran for this season. Should be a very nice boat to fish from!

Capt. Taylor Click runs out of Ashtabula in the summer, and he is first rate. The name of his charter service is Taylor Made. Ron Johnson who runs Thumper out of Fairport and Huron is top notch too.

I personaly would recomend "PERKY" out of Wild Wings harbor near Oak Harbor, Ohio. He is a great charter captain and he always comes in with the "Big Ones" and he catches the most!!!!!

Have fished with a bunch of good walleye & perch guys in western basin. However, if you want a really wild time catching big smallmouths for a change of pace, call Rick Dunlap in Port Clinton. Time and again I've seen him and fished with him when he puts clients on smallmouth and others complain about "no fish." He's good. Shouldn't be hard to get his phone from Port Clinton Chamber. Good luck.

I've fished the Western Basin of Lake Erie for twenty years on my own boat. I've met literally dozens of charter captains. The best by far is Jerry Meyers Jr. His boat is the Water Witch II. He is VERY knowledgeable and courteous. Fishing with Jerry is akin to going to walleye school (even for experienced anglers). He can be contacted through Lamberjack's Marina, Oak Harbor area.
