I've been looking all over to find a source for THIS YEAR'S (mfg date) ORION replacement red aerial flares -- anybody got a clue?

I can understand your desire to be buying "new" flares, but if it sets your mind at rest, I found that the old ones seem to have a long life.
A few years ago I was concerned because the date on my old set was 1988, so I ordered a new set that had the hand flares, gun flares, and flag. Just about a month ago, I noticed the old set sitting around, so I took them out on my 100yd. rifle range behind the house and tried them out, just to get rid of them. I had 5 in the set, and after the first 3 worked perfectly, I stuck the last 2 in the new set!

Although they may work well beyond the printed expiration date, you had better not rely on meeting the US Coast Guard requirements on waters where they have jurisdiction if the date has passed.

I keep the old ones, but I make certain I am legal. I buy mine at marine stores where I can look at the date myself. You should expect new ones to have an expiration date of sometime in 2004.

You have a six months from the expiration date to get new ones without getting a ticket in C.G. jurisdiction.
