View Full Version : Good mono line
I am searching for a good mono fishing line. Have always used Berkley XL, worked great. That is until they changed their formula last year. Now snaps at the knot. Tried Rapala finesse this weekend. It's better than the XL, but still have problems with knot breakage. The guy I was fishing with had new XL; it is terrible. Any new suggestions would be appreciated. Have some poles rigged with fireline, the feel is great. Still need a mono for other applications. Seems the mono manufacturers desire to make lower stretch line is resulting in knot problems.

I've tried the "new" lines as well as Trilene/Stren -- one I have NEVER had a problem with is a copolymer -- Silver Thread. It's not that easy to find in my neck of the woods, so I mail order from Cabela's.Another I can recommend is Tectan -- again from Cabela's -- a Damyl product from Germany.IMHO, these two can fill any bill I can come up with -- strength-limpness-abrasion resistance -- it's all there. For what it's worth ---- JimmiG
Try P-Line. I'm sold on it and so alot of my buddies who tournament fish for bass(although I don't hold that against them). Very strong and low memory. It's rather pricey(8.99 for 300 yd. spool)but it's definitely worth a try.I'll test it's abrasion resistence this week up in Georgian bay where I'll bang every shoal imaginable--if it holds up there it will work anywhere.

Try berkley XT great line the tournament line is good.FISH ON.
Maxima beats Stren, Trilene etc. hands down. You can find it in Cabela's Master Catalog. I use the Chameleon for most applications.

MAXIMA CHAMELEON IS THE IS THE STRONGEST MOST ABBRASIVE RESISTANT LINE I HAVE EVERE USED......PERIOD. IT IS A LITTLE STIFF BUT VERY STRONG , AWESOME KNOT STRENGTH. 6LB SPOOLS ON SPINNING REELS GOOD. EXCALIBER IS A CLOSE SECOND AND A LITTLE LIMPER. I USE MAXIMA IN RIVERS AND EXCALIBER IN LAKES. MAXIMA ALSO MAKES A HIGH VIS PINK, I USE IT FOR PITCHING JIGS IN THE MISSISSIPPI. NOT AS STRONG AS CHAMELEON BUT ALOT BETTER THAN TRILENE!!!!
GAME ON!!

Sorry for the name theft. Was using JJ until it got used by too many others, thought this would work. Keep the name, I'll make a new one.

I too have switched away from Trilene XL. I am using A combination of rapala finesse and gander mountains line. I like them both no complaints so far. The gander line is also a little cheaper then those I've compared pricing on. I am also trying the rapala tough on some bass rods haven't had much of a chance to test it yet.
Good luck

I have tried just about every kind of mono, and have come to the conclusion that Cabelas Pro Line is the best. I have fished pro tourneys with it, fished rocks, rivers, and everything in between, and have never, never, had a problem with it. The price is a bonus. I change my mono lines, about every other week and really go through the line. Believe me, I wouldn't use it, if I had any doubt that it would do the job.

Silver thread excaliber has worked well for me. I use the 10 pound line as an all around line, walleye, bass, etc. I got tired of losing lures in rocks when the six pound berkly/trilene products would break.. Excaliber is very abrasion resistant..
