View Full Version : What did I catch?
Fished the Mississippi today. Did o.k. with six walleyes, three bass, and one mystery fish. The fish was about two pounds, 16", shinny silver color, a small mouth, and yellow eyes. It resembled a shiner but I didn't know they got that big. Any idea what it was?

Maybe a mooneye or a goldeye?
Roger.

If it was skinny, blead a lot, and fought like heck, it was a mooneye.

Roger that - mooneye. If you catfish in the Summer, keep and freeze moons for excellent cut bait. Cats love' em. They are a blast to catch. We encounter them in the river we fish....I'll pull off a school of whites to chase a school of mooneye's simply because of the 'mini-tarpon' action of light line.

Howdy,
I feel that if you were to cross reference that with a shad, possibly an alewife you may find a similar. We have caught very large alewives here that really surprised us.
Keep us posted

Maybe it was a Whitefish? A shiner will have small teeth and their mouth is not rounded, the Whitefish has a small, soft mouth sort of like a Perch.
But the yellow eye sounds more like a shiner, skipjack or mooneye.
Happy Easter, Good Fishing!

The yellow eyes make it a Skipjack, don't they? Caught one myself on sat.

It sounds like a text book goldeye to me. They are bait theives in the North Saskatchewan river, epecially when I go sturgeon fishing. Chris

I'd say almost positively a mooneye being the Miss is full of them....

Sounds like a Red River Samon/Mooneye to me?

Dont wory, hands own it was a moon eye, caught a couple dozen in the past few weeks at the mississippi. The Golden eyes, shad like appearance, and if it hits on the surface are all major charecteristics of mooneye
