I have a trip planned for early september. I am wondering about the best routes for walleye fishing the area. Anyone have experience with fishing the bwca that time of year or what specific lakes are hot spots?

Get Mike Furtman's book "A Boundary Waters Fishing Guide" http://www.michaelfurtman.com/bwfish.htm and give it a good read. There is a nice index in the back that details what fish are in what BWCA and Quetico lakes.

At September, as in May, I would fish moving water with jigs. 1/4 oz pink heads and Kalin's 3" cotton candy grubs have worked well for me. You'll get a lot of smallmouth in tight, but the walleyes should be back down the current a litle.

Hope this helps,

Brad

we used to go up to crooked lake in the fall and spring back in my youth....probably couldn't make it now....my guess is that it is still good fishing way in that far....if you plan to go that far let me know and i can give you a few spots that were good..steve...i'm envious....we really had good times up there ..bring a warm sleeping bag...

I was up there a couple of years ago in Sept. A major cold front came in and it was extremely windy. We went out of trails end campground off Gunflint Trail. Saganaga Lake had 2 ft rollers on day, so use caution on the bigger lakes with canoe. We didn't have very good luck fishing. My advice is to find a lake with descent water and stay there. Moving everyday takes time and will limit the amount of fishing you can do. The next time I go there I will likely paddle in for 2 days stay on a lake and fish, then paddle out. Have fun. It is a neat area. Hopefully the blowdown timber doesn't all go up in a blaze this year.

Thor, go to ely.org website. It will give you the list of outfitters and bait shops in the area. Also check with the USFS website as they plan on doing some control burns in the blow down areas this fall.
