I thinking of buying a boat with a 1999 225 hp Opti.
Are these the good Opti's? Or all the Opti's Bad?
Thanks Bob

I don't hear bad things about 1999 Opti's. My old 1999 200 Opti ran like a dream!

Fish for them all...

It seems like with the 1999's most of them were good, but if you got a bad one, it blew within about 50 hours. So if this motor has ran good so far, I would say go for it! Good luck!

Mercury came out with a new optimax oil. I would strongly recommend using it after talking with the merc rep this spring. I've had an opti on my last two boats and I've been fortunate in no problems. If you had a bad opti, it did sound like it blew up early so you should be good to go, but I would still recommend the new opti synthetic blend.

Find a similar boat equiped with a Yamaha, that would be my advice. I have read it way too many times, "my opti blew" to risk the chance. What kind of warranty do you get with this motor? If it does blow and you're out of warranty then you are out $12k, not fun! If we were talking about a 135 or 150 opti then I would feel alright about my purchase but given the track record of the 225's I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. I actually feel for those who have these $30k rigs with big opti's on them, it's like a liability on the back of your boat and your resale will likely track with this.

I've got a 1999 225 Opti on on a 2025 Pro V. In 4 years I haven't had one problem and it's the best motor I've had of the 5 boats I've owned. I have had some concern reading about some of the other blown Opti's, but my 1999 has been a great running, trouble-free motor. If you like the boat enough to buy it, have good mechanic check it out for you to ease your concerns.
