My buddy has a 2001 Evinrude 9.9 kicker on his boat. His problem is after trolling for 20 minutes or so the thing dies. It seems to run better with the hood off of it but it will still die out. Any ideas? He's had it back to the dealer SEVERAL times but the dealer either can't seem to fix it or doesn't care and he's become very disgusted with this problem. I have the same engine and it hasn't missed a beat yet. It seems like an electrical problem created by heat but no one can pinpoint it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

An uncle had very similar problems and it ended up being the CD (Elec. Ignition) Module. Replaced and not a problem since.

Before you spend big bucks replacing the module, remove the lower cowling. You'll find a rubber hose that channels cooling water from the powerhead to the exhaust. If this has come lose or off the cowling and cover are filling with exhaust and killing the motor. This could be why it runs fine with the cover off. Happened to me after the dealer did some work on my motor and it caused some head scratching over the fact that the motor started great and then died but ran perfectly with the cover removed. Worth a look.
