I'm heading to lake of the woods on june 19th. We'll be at morris point. Does anyone have any suggestions for catching walleyes preferably larger eyes in this area at this time. I'm willing to go for a long boat ride if needed. Thanks for any help.

If you are targeting larger walleyes you will almost certainly have to plan on taking a long boat ride from Morris Point. The bigger ones will be near the reefs by then. You might be able to stick some in the 25-30 ft range with bouncers/spinners but they probably won't thick there.

You better hope the lake cleans up by then. Right now, on that side of the lake the bite is really shut down due to all the water coming in from the Rainy. Hope you have insurance. The launches are wrecking props and rudders on all the deadfall floating into the main lake. It supposedly is 2-3 miles out in the lake and heading north. People I know living along the river have commented for weeks on all the deadfall going down the river. Some resorts have had problems with it stacking up on the docks.

I would consider fishing the west side of the lake. Fishing has been very good and should continue for quite some time yet. Their will be big fish on the reefs and in the mud by then and easily accessable from the west, should be plenty of eaters also, this has been one of the better years i have seen on this lake since I moved here 15yrs ago.my 2cents

when you get there if the gaps are still mess, you trip
wont be ruined...trailer to the west side of the lake. they
are enjoying the kind of early season fishing you would
expect along pine island.

its win-win

Thanks for the info. When you say the west side do you mean the warroad area or buffalo bay?

buffalo bay is fabulous (almost too easy). but you dont need
to fish canada to catch fish in lake of the woods.

warroad area, springsteel over to south buffalo point,
elm point and areas in between. it has been the best
early season fishing in even the oldest of fishermens
memories. close in and nice fish too.

i was at riverbend resort today and glen said the fishing
and the water situation along pine island as improved
a bunch in the last couple of days. i bet you will be
just fine. (those fish havent been bothered much the
last couple of weeks.)

Jim, another option if you are looking for some excellent fishing with the chance for a big one would be to head up to Knight Island, it's about a 15 or 16 mile boat ride straight north of morris point, great structure and there usually isn't much pressure up there. The lake can get nasty so don't head to far without a big enough boat and navigation. Good luck, Ryan

I get a weekly email from Borderview Logde on Weeler's Point. They are reporting punky fishing because of the high water conditions. They report that the water is still rising. I haven't been up there this year so this is not firsthand. This is their email address. info@borderviewlodge.com

When the water level is normal I have always found fishing to be excellent on the US side. There is plenty of good information floating around at the resorts. Good luck.
