View Full Version : SPLIT RINGS ON OR OFF?
SHOULD I TAKE THE SPLIT RINGS OFF CRANKS LIKE THUNDERSTICKS, ROGUES, AND REEF RUNNERS WHEN USING A CROSS LOCK SNAP? I'VE BEEN TROLLING WITH THEM ON AND HAVE HAD SOME SUCCESS, BUT I'M JUST WONDERING IF IT AFFECTS THE ACTION OF THE LURE AT ALL? ANY THOUGHTS ON THE SUBJECT ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
we never take them off. In fact if there is not one there, we make sure w eput one on.

off, sorry to disagree. But have tried both and have better success with them off. Also switch out the trebles to triple grips.

I experimented with all sorts of snaps in years gone by. I concluded that removing the split ring is a bad idea. Convenient, yes. But fish catching ability decreased. So, when the lure comes with a split ring, tie directly to the split ring. When the lure does not come with a split ring, use a loop-type knot, or use a bass snap.

But how about attaching a cross-lok snap to a split ring?

Whatever you do DON'T remove the VMC hooks from the Reef Runners. The reverse barb, cone cut Barbarian hooks they put on their lures are awesome. Things that get stuck with em tend to stay stuck whether it's a fish, or your pant leg! LOL

That is the proper method to use. Attach your snap to the ring.

Reef Runners I take them off. At faster speeds they wont run sideways and they will run true.
Thanks for the tip. I've tried everything to get little rippers true and there is always a tendency toward one side or the other. I'll be happy to try leaving the split rings off.

While on this subject, BassPro Shops has new oval shaped split rings so your knot doesn't fall in the split. Seems like a good idea , has anyone tried these?

I concluded the least hardware, the better. I tie right to the split ring with an improved clinch knot, if no split ring, I use a uniknot.
As is often the case on talk forums, there are as many folks for, as against, hardware on the line. I prefer no hardware.
Cranks are factory balanced. Adding or subtracting weight might not be a good idea.
