View Full Version : How many rods??

LAST EDITED ON Jun-06-01 AT 12:51PM (CST)[p]Here in Pennsylvania, we are limited to 2 rods per legal angler. I beleive that holds true for OH and NY as well. Now, here is my question:
Are the rules different on Lake Erie? I am not accusing anyone or anything, but, I often see two fisherpersons and lots of rods down, like 10, 12+ between the downriggers, boards and flatliners. Do the rules change because this water is Coast Guard jurisdiction? Or what? Seriously, I am only looking for an answer not to cause an argument.

I am sure this is small potatoes compared to most of you but here goes:
4 trolling, 2 musky, 1 baitcasting/bass, 12 spinning/rigging,
2 fly rods, and 2 snoopy types.

same rules!! 2 rods per angler with up to 3 hooks each.
I will give these trollers the benefit of doubt by adding that ~maby their wives and kids are hanging out below deck? If not it is definitly wrong, illegal, and unsprotsman like.
~these are probably the guys that would brag about getting their 10 fish each limits in an a couple-few hours! :-)

I messed up when I hit a wrong key and this went to "print" before I realized what happened. I had to pull it to edit.
BUT THIS, TOO, LOOKS LIKE A GOOD ONE TO RUN WITH MINE! Answer both!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>How Many Rods Do YOU own<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Me - I have 12 spinners all kinds, 4 levelwind casting, 6 levelwind trolling, 2 Muskie rods, 2 9'+ steelhead rods, 1 noodle, 2 surf casting, 2 flyrods and 2 micros.
Man, I have to reconsider my priorities................

FJH1,
What happened here was I wrote the "Subject" line and messed up hitting "enter". The only thing he/she saw was "How many rods". I pulled it back to edit and fill in the "body'. But, we can run both questions in the thread!

Well, in that case I can add something:
Spinning: 13
Bouncer: 2
Musky: 2
Trolling: 6
Fly: 1
All the above are St. Croix. I have a brush pile of other rods, geez, I hope my wife doesn't see this :-).

In Wisconsin we get three lines apiece - I believe only 1 bait per line though. I'll check the regs quick but im fairly sure on this one.

I am from Pa but fish NY. Erie as the other waters of the state are 2 rods per. Fish regs are under NY DEC not Coast Guard.
Came across a guy 2 seasons ago by himself trolling 4 rods, I didnt have any trouble counting his lines either as the fool ran across in back of me and my 2 partners, tangling 10 lines.

On Wisconsin waters of Lake Michigan you are permitted 3 lures per angler -- usually that means 3 rods, but not always. A popular method with downriggers is to have one line from the rod & reel attached to the downrigger weight, and another lure afixed above the weight on what is called a "slider." Thus, 2 lures, one rod.
Another presentation off the boards is to use a 3-way swivel and run a diving lure to the bottom with a light trolling spoon on top. Works like a charm for smaller boats that cannot get 3 rods per person to deploy efficiently.

HOW MANY RODS DO I OWN... r u nuts??? LOL!! My wife would pull the plug and I'm sure someone (IS Sluggo around??)would be sure she found out! This is a LOADED question if I ever saw one, got blackmail wrote all over it!
My wife gives me a hard time about "all those rods" also!!
and she thinks I only have 8!!!!! even though I have built 4 this winter and keep two in my truck, two or three in the boat and several (8 I think) around the house and in the garage, almost forgot the 6 I have down at my parents "farm" for when friends or whoever show up and want to fish!!!
Man I hope she dosen't realize I have that manny!!!
well of course a couple are "her" rods even though I use them more often than her!
It amazed my friends a few years back when I was able to come up with enough rods and tackle to take 14 or 15 of my closest friends out on a charter for My bachelors party!

After counting how many rods y'all have, I feel much better now. I only have 12 rods, but I have 21 working reels, and 7 reels I use for parts. Oh yea, I forgot I have three reels on order from Cabelas. Do cane poles count?
I'll be at Lac Suel the last of June, and was told only 1 rod per person. However, I don't know if you can have multiple baits.
BTW, I'm an addictions counselor, and all of you would meet the criteria for my Obsesive/Compulsive Disorder Group. HMMM, online group therapy. Let me think about that.

Reason I don't tell is someone SQUEELED on me last year. My wife found out how many crankbaits I've been buying and I had to promise not to buy any this year. I've behaved pretty well, only bought 1 husky jerk on close out for $2, but spoons arent crankbaits are they... just bought 100 of em on EBAY. Hope I get to the mailbox first.

I know that when the DEC is on the water out of Dunkirk, or Barcelona NY, they specifically look for that very infraction with binoculars as they cruise the area. 2 rods per person only.
I wish they would take the rods from the cheaters, and fine them.

Here in Michigan we are allowed 2 rods per person with two hooks or lures on each. If your trolling Lake Mi. for salmon, trout, you are allowed 3 rods per person, if your trolling for eyes only two rods. I've seen boats trolling the big lake with two guys on board running up to 10, 12 rods at a time, it's a little upsetting but I figure they'll get caught sooner or later. As for how many rods I own at last count it was 165, I know I can only use 2 at a time but I just can't help myself, I know there must be a name for this disease, just don't know what it's called.

OK, well I am a youngin but here on Colorado you can have to if you get a stamp on your liscense and ice fish with three if you get the aforementioned stamp and another stamp but one of the three has to be a tip-up. As for my "arsenal" like I said I just a helpless teen but I have 6 active spinning set ups, just one baitcasting set up, a fly fishing pole, and 5 assorted spinning reels, two spinning rods, and 3 ice fishing rods. Oh yeah and the remains of three reels for parts harvesting.

I know the question is How many rods can we legally fish with and I think that has been answered.
As for the other direction of this thread, How many rods do I own, a little advice.
1. Never have all of your rods in one place. If the wife sees them all, we could have trouble.
2. Always borrow a rod from a buddy. Then if the wife does see them you can honestly say "those are not all my rods". Seems to get me off the hook.

The answer is we are only allowed two rods any where in Ohio per person. But that does bring up a beef I have been working on and that is If we are only allowed to catch 6 walleye or what ever your limit in your state is Why does it matter how many rods you use to do it. So you wouldn't have to stay out on the lake as long, burn so much fuel(better for the enviroment & wallet)If I run 20 rods I can still only catch 6 walleye. Give me some feed back on this...
I didn't have any problem with the wife until she made me buy one of those fancy oak racks that hold 16 rods. I couldn't fit all of them in it, so I had to tell her the rest belonged to my brothers and took them to their house.

That has been a beef with me as well, especially in Ontario with the 1 rod limit, I just can't understand that, honest. The creel limit is THE limit even if you had 50 rods out. ;-) I know a person can only manage so many rods at any one time. I have no problem with the 2 rod limit other than "rigging" on Erie or other "Big Water". In this case I think a 3 rod limit should be considered, like WI and MI have for salmon fishing in Lake Michigan.
Just my thoughts.

Seems to me you'd all be doing the sport a favor by checking the registration number on these guys fishing too many rods, take a picture and report them.
Airwave, I think the reason they dont allow as many rods as you want is that it would be more likely that more people would be catching their limit and the bag limit would have to be reduced to maintain the fishery. I know the feeling thou, I live in MN and you can only fish one rod. It would be nice to use at least two, but they are already talking about reducing the limit from 6 to 4 or less walleyes.
Good Fishing to ya

I thought about that but seriously believe that those of us that Can manage that many rods are going to catch our limit anyhow so whats the difference.I don't think more rods will increase the amount you catch just how fast you do it. The only problem I really see is people getting a limit and then going back for a second or I guess on good days a third. and I don't agree with that. I don't have a problem with lets say you have 5 people on board you can run 10 lines <thats plenty> but if you only have 1 or 2 your limited to 2 or 4 and personally I like to run at least 6 -8 . I guess a 3 rod per person would work well in my case. Just my thoughts .. Good fishin.. There biting good now and the weather this weekend is forcasted to be excellent!!!!!

Here in Kansas we can use two rods per person. On some of the lakes here, I won't name, the fishing can be hot and heavy and some times you can't manage two rods at the same time. Especially if you run into a school of Wiper. My partner and I were prefishing for a tournament and hit one of these schools and almost lost 4 rods. Thankfully they were spinning rods and reels and the reels caught the gunnel. If fishing gets hot I only use one rod and have the second ready incase of a break off. Other wise I do use two but I make sure that I either have them in holders or in my hand.
