View Full Version : What pitch High-Five to Get

I have a Triton 189dcf with Merc 200EFI originally spinning a Tempest Plus 23-pitch. I got full rpm (5800) at WOT with that prop but my holeshot was slow and my steering torque strong. With a High-Five loaner (25-pitch), I get a good holeshot and much less steering torque, but only 5200 rpm at WOT (with the motor trimmed up about 1/4 of the way--couldn't do more because the water was too rough).

My question: should I get a 23-pitch High-Five for optimum performance (full rpm and even better holeshot) or assume that if I had been able to trim the motor up more with my 25-pitch High-Five, my WOT rpm's would have reached max (5800 instead of 5200)?

Many thanks in advance

I think the 23, but without you being able to trim all the way up while you tested the 25, the upper rpms are only speculation. The rule I have heard in the past between a tempest and a high 5 is that the to get equal rpms, the high 5 should be 1" larger. So this means a 24 for you. Unfortunately, the even numbers are small hub versions if I remember right. If you are like most of us walleye fisherman, your rig will tend to get heavier over time so the 23 would be my suggestion. Let us know how things turn out. And if you need a home for that 23 tempest, I may be interested.
