Just returned from our annual trip to NW Ontario, the Lac Seul area, and wanted to relate some information, current as of 06/01.
So you know, highway 502 is indeed under construction, we had to wait while they installed a drian pipe, luckily, we only were tied up for about 15 mins. There ares several sections of 502 that are compleated, totaling about 40 miles. The rest is in awful shape, even worse then last year.
The week we were there (5-26 through 6-01) the lakes were way overfull, the water was slightly stained (last year it was gin clear) and in every lake we fished, the temperatures were much warmer, averaged around 60 degrees F. Monday 5-28, it rained on and off all day, nailed them, must have caught/released over 100 fish myself in Lake Minnitaki. Tuesday and Wednesday, the sun was out, very high pressure, big blue skys. Had a hard time finding fish, caught enough for shore lunch and a couple over the slot to take home. Thursday everything quit, threw everything in the tackle box at them, couldn't buy a decent Walleye. Went Northern Pike fishing in the afternoon, had some follow the lures, only a few bite. Caught a couple smallies on Mepps spinners. At the end of the day, left Minnitaki, stopped to fish the chute, and spent the next 2 hours in heaven!
Caught numerous Walleyes, including 3 fish over 28", and hooked the largest Walleye I have ever seen, a monster well over 3 feet long, that we lost by the side of the boat when it shook its head and threw out the straightened out jig.
In short, the bite was on and off, the lakes were overfull of water, the weather was mostly fine, and the lakes were like glass. The deer flies were already out and at work too. A wonderful time was had by all 9 of us, and we will surely be back again next year.
