How many leeches to a pound? 10 dozen, 15 dozen? If somebody has a ballpark average, I'd appreciate it.

It depends on the size. I think the half pound I bought last year had about 14 dozen in it, and they seemed to be pretty average size for the most part. I think you'd see somewhere between 20 and 30 dozen in a pound.

When the leeches are culled and classified to size, as they usually are in the U.S., the following generally holds true:

Jumbo - 4 inches and up - 8 to 10 dozen per pound
Large - 3 inches to 4 inches - 11 to 14 dozen per pound
Medium - 2 inches to 3 inches - 15 to 20 dozen per pound
Samll - 1 inch to two inches - 21 to 24 dozen per pound

If the sizes are mixed, as they are in most places in Canada, your guess is as good as anyone else. Good luck and good fishing.

Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry.

Thanks! You guys are prime examples of why I think this is the most awesome fishing/outdoors site anywhere. I don't care what the question, somebody--and usually more than one, knows the answer, knows it well, and knows all the options that go along with each answer. What's more, the answers come in just a few minutes.

Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a LifeCentral.com? : )

Thanks guys, this place just makes me laugh because it's so cool!

Hi at my store we only bulk out the jumbos. They usually run 7-9 doz. per pound. Any smaller than 9 doz. per lb. is too small to use in my oppinion.

Jumbos didn't work all that well on Millacs for opener.
The smaller ones seemed to work better. I've seen smaller
ones work better in other places too.
