I'm looking for some help here boys. I'm in the market for a GPS unit. Do I need to spend extra money on new technology (WAAS) to get the latest thing? Or, is a DGPA or GPS fine for what we normally do, which is to just mark fisk on a GPS unit.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

How precise do you need to be? Do you understand what the WAAS gets you? The sats sync up with known points on the ground with WAAS to calibrate and ensure precision positioning. (Within a couple feet)

Personally I don't think we would need WAAS unles you wanted to fish a certain boulder on a rock pile every time out. GPS will get you on the rock pile within yards of way point. WAAS will get you to the exact boulder you want to fish.

Most Garmins mow come with WAAS. When you're running into a tight harbor at night or in the fog accuracy is nice :-))

I don't think you need WAAS. With the decommision of Selective Availibility, regular GPS is pretty accurate. If you want a good fix on a position, I simply set up on the EXACT point I want to mark, and st my GPS up to record the position using an average of all positions it records. I set it to record a reading once every second and I let it sit for about 5 minutes, the longer the better, but I find that 5 minutes or 300 position recordings is plenty.

Just pray that there aren't anymore attacks on the US or we go to war again. The US government turned off all civilian GPS on 9-11 for a while. It was done minutes after the second plane hit. Another attack and it may not get turned back on again.
