I would like to see the Fisheries Biologists from Minn,Wisc,Ill,and Iowa get together and get a slot limit enforcd on the Mississippi River. My length limits would be as follows. You could keep 15 to 20 inch fish, and only one over 27 inches, everthing else would be released. We as sportsman dont't shoot Hen Pheasants, and we try not to shoot Hen Mallards so why can't we let some of those big gals go.After all they are the future of are fishery.Just my 2 cents.I would like to see what everyone else thinks. Thanks KORN

In MHO, If people want to keep those mercury invested mud puppies, let em' have at them! (kidding) :-)
The river changes population so often, It's very hard to regulate. I think mostly it's regulated by fish consumption hazard. The river current, makes it impossible for the dnr to sample, and knowing the est. pop. of fish is all the dnr. has to go by, to manage it correctly. They have an educated guess what the pops are but, that's all a "Guess". Good luck! and may the fish be with you! EE

LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-01 AT 04:45PM (CST)[p]There should be a slot for the entire state unless under special circumstances like Mille Lacs and other lakes that have their own requirements. Lowering the limit isn't going to do help. Size restrictions are necessary for many lakes.

I would like to see a slot also. I agree that the 18" - 27" slot would be nice. I fish Pepin often and the fishing is good now, but the slot might make it even better. I have talked with the head of fisheries in Lake City and he did'nt think that there was a need for a slot limit. He thought the enviromental health of the river was much more important for Walleye populations.

Thats the answer!!! I read a post about water rage earlier, and here is the answer! The raging people are eating these fish! All the Mercury and PCB's are obviously creating mental problems! And, the Jet ski and water ski crowd get delerious from swallowing all that water when they do a face plow!!

We need something that's for sure. I'd go for a slot 15"-20" and one over 28". I`d also like to see a 15" size limit on sauger so people quit treating them like they are perch. I`d also like to see reduced bag limits on the Iowa/Wisconsin boundary waters. Right now it's 10, only six can be walleyes. Most often in the fall and spring, it`s 10 little saugers. Let`s get some tri-state togetherness and save the wonderful fishery that the Mississippi River is. Beaver

Slots are not always the answer.

The best thing we can do is support our local Fisheries Biologists. The are the ones studying the lakes & rivers and know what will and wont work to improve the fisheries. The problem is that sometimes the public does not want to hear the answers they come up with. Politics then follow.
