Just about ready to put my deposit down on this boat, and I need some last minute comments/opinions. The decision that i still have to make is what motor to put on this boat. I was all set on the new Yamaha F90 4-stroke, but the dealer that I am working with is trying to sway me towards the Suzuki DF90 4-stroke. He deals with both Yamaha & Suzuki motors, but thinks that I would be happier with the Suzuki because of the EFI.

I have searched the archives and read all posts concerning Yamaha/Suzuki 4-stroke motors, they each have their pro's & con's. I have no opinion of either brand since I currently run a Mercury 40hp 2-stroke. Is the Suzuki which has EFI, worth the extra $700 over the Yamaha which does not have EFI? The only concern I have with the Suzuki is with my other hobby bodybuilding. I'm 6'4" and weigh 275 lbs. The Yamaha F90 is 46 lbs lighter then the Suzuki. Does anyone think their might be a problem if I were to go with the Suzuki on this tiller boat with the extra motor weight and with my size?

I have same boat with 75 Honda. The Honda is about 390 pounds. For some reason Hondas seem to be heavier motors.

I outwiegh you by about 50 pounds and seem to have no problem plaining out quick. With a 90 it should be evan faster, easier.

I some times have a difficult time seeing when going slow, the front end gets up kind of high. Trimming down helps.


From my expieriance very little problems with weight. You could always put water in the front live well. Unless they have changed from 1999, two batteries go up front also.

If you could wait until after the 1st of the new year, you could probably take advantage of the six year warranty from Suzuki. This is not to say that they will offer it again, but they have for the last three years running, from Jan. 1st to Mar. 31st of the given year. My brother got it with his 2001 Suzuki 115 four stroke. My humble opinion: you'll never regret the EFI. Remember, it is multi port, sequential. Better to have EFI than try to keep the carbs coordinated in the future.

I have had experiance with both of these engins. My personal opinion is that I would go with the susuki myself but that is just becasue of the name and they are some sweet little engins. But on the other hand you will be happy with either engin they are some hellish engins both of them and I hope you like your new boat. You cant go wrong with either.

This year I went to a new rig with the 70 hp Johnson (really a Suzuki) 4-stroke tiller. The EFI on it is so impressive compared to carburetors. It has always started with just 2 cranks of the engine and it has never killed nor even stumbled. With the EFI it just purrs all the time - that EFI make it a sweet engine.

I had the same boat with the F-80...great boat poor motor.Go with the Suzuki,no carbs,no rough idle,no oil burning on start up,no gas in the oil, these are the known Yamaha problems.I would also recommend at least a 2800 pound trailer with brakes.The brakes cost a little more but saved my truck from wearing a deer several times.I'am not sure on the boat weight but 1300,motor 400, fuel at close to 7/gal,2-3 batterys at 50-60 ea,trolling motors,kicker motor possibly,all the gear you will be well over that 2400Ibs.,but if it's on a lift all summer it really doesn't matter.Good Luck
