The scenario:

It had rained moderately, all night. Got out on Mille Lacs right after the rain stopped yet still overcast. Caught 5 walleys in an hour in 10' on a rocky point. C&R 15", 15", 19", 22" and 23"; slot limits make me want to log my catches.

Then the sun broke out into blue bird sky, no more eyes. Worked my way deeper, went onto the deep flats, even a shady underwater bluff. No more bites in 3 hours. Couldn't find any weeds yet for shade. Very scattered sonar marks, no bites.

Heck with this, I'll put on a small bass jig and sight fish smallies up on the sand flat shore. Cruised the scattered rice weeds up shallow 5' (visibility 8'). Found some smallies, then saw a big fish laying on the bottom, BIG sucker maybe? Got within 10' and realized it was a 5lb walleye. Even saw the white tail tip. I cast my jig past it, hopped it closer. The eye finned slightly aside as my jig hopped towards it. Another cast, same thing. Third cast bopped em on the nose, and did he ever shoot out of there like a rocket. In an hour I saw 4 more eyes (2 and 3 lbs), all motionless. They weren't sick, I got all of em to swim off quickly. No interest in lures, minnows, or leeches. They were just too busy getting a tan!
