You've probably all heard about the third Mercury Optimax 225 head that blew up after 7 hours of use on my brothers engine.
My brother was supposed to meet the Mercury technician who's going to make the decisions on his motor at 3:00 p.m. today at the Marine shop that will do any warranty work. The interesting part was the fact that he was already their when my brother called at 11:00 a.m..
The question is will Mercury at least follow through on their promise to allow my brother to be their while decisions are being made about his $14,000 to $15,000 dollar motor that is only 3 years old.
3 years old and it's already gone through 3 heads. That's pretty outstanding performance from the Mercury Optimax!
I'll let you know if the Mercury Tech actually stuck around long enough for my brother to see him! After all he juggled his whole schedule, and even has to work late tomorrow night in order to be their.

Junk it and buy a new Evinrude, best move I ever made.

I think he should go with a new Yamaha. Maybe even try one of their new 4-strokes. But I still prefer the 2-strokes instead.

If you read the post "Opti motor question" you'll find out from my brother that the Mercury tech wasn't their as promised, and actually left 1 hour early to insure this.
I'm utterly amazed that Mercury even went ahead and replaced 3rd powerhead with the 4th powerhead without his authorization.
I bought a different engine than Mercury because of what I read on this website. When will Mercury learn that poor customer service is costing them engine sales, and will continue to plague them in the future.

I was just wondering if any of the Mercury Pro's or staff know why the Mercury Tech./Rep. failed to be their as agreed upon. Is this good customer service? Is it normal for Mercury to proceed with repairs on their engine's without the authorization of the owner?
I'm certainly happy that the Mercury Pro Staff is happy that Mercury is standing behind this Optimax motor and replacing the 3rd blown head with a 4th head. I'm sure they would be ecstatically happy if it was their motor. Of course they generally don't keep a motor over a year anyways so their motors are always under warranty.

Proud owner of any other boat motor than a Mercury Optimax!

First off, My Opti is still running strong for it's second owner 3 years old! I have a friend that has 4 or 5 years and hundreds and hundreds of hours on hid Opti, still going strong. The T itself in the fuel line may cause a fuel restriction and a lean condition, but then I know several guys who do this.
5400 rpm, how tall a prop do you have on it?
Do you have a jackplate or run the motor really high?
What is your water pressure at wot?
How about Temp at wot?
How did the metal get in the T stat?
Lots more to know before outsiders can make a judgement.

The real lesson here is do not sell anything to R or K Hynes unless it is bullet proof, indestructable, and runs flawlessly for a millenium.
"Y" doesn't your brother do his own complaining?

Well..I'd back up the naysayers if this was the only complaint about blown up Opti's I had seen. I have a great Mariner, but would not chance an Opti. It seems to be a crap-shoot whether or not it will last. I only know 2 guys with Opti's. One runs perfect and the other is a planter in the guys yard after the third power head went.

Give me a Optimax anyday before I'll touch any other brand. The new Bombardier engines are too new too risk touching (they are not the same as the old engines). Yamaha engines are too hard to get parts for if something does happen. Hondas are too expensive to repair. Most optimax engines that have problems can be linked back to customer issues.
