Does anyone know if walleyes will spawn on sand bottom when there is no gravel available? There is alot of current and the walleyes are caught in this area around spawning season. If they do, can it be as successful as on a gravel bottom? Thanks for the info.

As Far as I know they do and it is some what successful. I lived near Saginaw Bay and we regularly caught fish in cuts where the bottom was nothing but sand. Later we could see the fry is that same area. Although they wouldn't last long because the bass would invade these same ares to spawn.

I am no Biologist but I know walleye will look for whatever they get in spawning beds, gravel and marl first choice. Weeds are used more often in smaller rivers or creeks were no gravel is present, even brush piles! Scoria or clay will also serve as a bed.

They take what they get but successful spawning is another story, current and temperature with a stable water level is key to a good hatch.

The University on Minnesota has a great sight for fishery info, if I was of no help or you need a bit more check it out-ok-?

Hope I was of some help.
