My brother in law has a Pro V 1800 w/ a Honda 130. Top end speed with 2 guys is roughly 36mph or so. He is running a 15 pitch prop and was told not to go up to a 17.
Can anyone tell me why? Also, if he goes up, does that mean he loses top end and gains holeshot or is it the other way around? Hole shot is very good in my opinion, so I'm assuming if he goes to a 17 he will increase top end and lose some hole shot.
Thanks,
NC

Check the Honda web site ( http://www.honda-marine.com/hmframeset.htm ) there are lots of prop tests that can help you pick the right prop for your application.

The 130 is designed to reve @5000-6000RPM, and makes it's 130HP @5500. If the pitch of the prop is too shallow, it will have a great holeshot, but will over-rev and not achieve max speed. Increasing pitch slows holeshot, but will often increase top end (untill the pitch is too high). What you're typically looking for is the perfect compromise. Increasing (or reducing) pitch by 1" will reduce (or increase) RPM by about 200. The speed you quote seems low. Is the boat a tiller model? If not, check the speed against a GPS receiver.

Boat Nut,
The boat is a console and I thought the speed seemed low as well. Not exactly sure about the RPM's though.
So would you say to go from a 15 to 17 then?
Thanks,

I wouldn't do anything until you can confirm speed and RPM. Speedometers on motors have been known to be wrong. If you've been in skinny water, check for dirt, pebbles, sand etc. in the (petot?) water hole (if that's what honda uses) in the front of the lower gearcase. If it uses a paddle wheel, they are notoriously slow. GPS is best.

Boat Nut,
I'll give my brother in law a call tonight. We have clocked the boat at roughly 37 mph with a GPS. Just not sure of the RPM's. Let's say the boat runs 37mph with a 15 pitch prop, in theory shouldn't going to a 17 prop increase speed and lower hole shot or do I have that backward?
Thanks,

In theory if you go from a 15p to a 17p you will increase your top end speed at the sacrifice of hole shot. HOWEVER, like Boatnut said, before you make this switch you must know your speed at wide open throttle and more importantly you must know your RPM's at W.O.T. Without knowing the RPM value you are shooting in the dark. If your brother-in-law's engine is significantly (several hundred RPM) above the recommended RPM range at WOT then the 17p is going to help.
