Anyone own one of these ? I am taking mine out for the first time in the morning and was wondering about the proper break-in procedure ? Looks great ( huge motor as big as an OPTI ) and works with my old smart craft gauges from my OPTI .

CJHughes?

Talks cheap, and I guess the written word is as well! I was just wondering why you chose to buy a Mercury again after you dumped the Opticrap? Did Mercury finally come through, and back up their product? I just thought I'd include your statement from an earlier post about your optimax from August 8, 2002 below. I'm just wondering because I'm trying to track how many different guys have stated problems with the Opticrap engines. It's a ton of guys but I recognized your name from several posts that I read today. I am not trying to attack you on this, because I suspect you took a hit when you got rid of the engine. You also sound excited about the new motor, and I hope you got a good EFI after all the trouble with the Optimax. I just felt obligated to ask. Ryan Hines

25. "RE: OPTIMAX CRAP"
In response to message #24

"We have everyone telling us IF we break the motor in right , IF we make sure it is warmed up everytime we hit the throttle , IF we don't back off of the throttle to quick , IF we take care of it (whatever that means ) ,everything should be ok . Well I am on my THIRD POWERHEAD on a 2000 225 Opti . I say Merc has problems BIG problems but if you want to throw your $15,000.00 to Merc for research and development go ahead . But when it is cold and dark out on Lake Erie in November the last thing I want to worry about is if that piece of junk hanging off the back of my Triton is going to blow when I back the throttle down alittle to fast coming off of a 6 ft wave cause I can't see the next wave because it is 2 in the morning and the full moon went behind a cloud . Go ahead and talk Merc up I am getting rid of my JUNK and you couldn't give me an OMC . Yamaha is looking better all the time .
What ever happen to the motors that you just started it and run it you didn't worry about backing it off slow waiting for it to warm up or any of that other hype and bull .As far as TAKING CARE OF THE OPTI I am giving my GMC truck to my 17 year old son I bought it new in 91 it has 135,000 miles on it, I know how to TAKE CARE OF IT .
Wayne is PI$$ OFF and he has every right to be !"

If you look at all of my post you will see that I own Three Merc's right now , so I do like Merc . But I was offered either a New Opti or the New Digital EFI . Oh I know you have never had any problems with your OPTI ever, if so that is great . Merc went above and beyond the call of customer service but it was a long hard road getting there . I used my boat 7 days last summer the rest of the time it was in the shop it has been that way for three years . I feel for the guys that still own a Opti , that have to listen to all of the bull about not breaking it in right ,or you are taking off to fast after it has idle for a long time or any of the other bull that has been posted it is all BULL . Merc HAS a problem with their OPTI'S . BUT I am happy with my new EFI and it is faster than any OPTI and has a good track record . I am happy with Merc . So do you know anything about the break-in procedure ?

Excuse if I am stating the obvious here, I would think the best place for that info you be your owners manual.

Hey Perchjerker. I couldn`t have said it better myself. Read the owners manual. Simple as that.

The break in is different on all of the motors, and things even change sometimes as the motors come out. Take a look at the manual, and enjoy the boat this morning! I'd be wearing some waterproof buffalo robes this morning if I was you, and your in Minnesota.

Later, Ryan

I read your post again, and just to make it clear I think the Optimax engines are crap. I also think Mercury isn't following through and helping the owners that have blown multiple heads.

Replacing powerhead after powerhead until the warranty runs out is not a solution if it's your engine.
