This one's a little embarrassing, but here goes. I have two of these reels that I love for jigging and drifting, but am having a problem when casting them. About every third time I try to open the bail to cast, it won't open fully beacuse it bumps against the knob on the stem that closes the bail when you start reeling. The problem only occurs when the bail arm is in a certain position. I can fix the problem by turning the handle a little to rotate the bail, but this gets to be quite a nuisance over the course of a day.

Am I missing something obvious here? Or do I just need to learn to stop the bail arm in the appropriate position at the end of each retrieve?

Homer,
your not alone. It is probably the only thing you can say bad about that reel. I haven't found a way around it yet other than to just rotate the spool a little like you already do.

Small price to pay for one of the most durable spinning reels on the market. The manual bail close is a nusince but it is also one less mechanical thing to break on a reel.

I was a Daiwa rep back when the SS reels were first introduced and I`m still using the originals. The line roller has to be between 12 and 1 o'clock for the line roller to have clearance to open. You have to make sure to stop reeling just a little earlier, that`s all. Either that or disengage the anti-reverse so you can backreel a little bit if you need to. I have no idea how old those reels are, but they work just as good as they did when they were new. Beaver
