fella's any advice on what brand/type of speakers to put in the boat ?
Get a pair, that have adequate power rating - in the open water, you often need to turn the volume up quite high to hear; has the largest size that will comfortably fit in the area to be installed - better sound - and have plastic cones. No paper please to get degraded in the high moisture environment.
Take care

I bought mid-priced radio shack marine speakers 14 years ago. Still like them. I even put marine speakers (6x9)in my old pickup, 10 years ago, dual cone. Still like them. Maybe its just me, but I think stereos sound much different in a boat on the water than they do at home or in a car. So, for my lousy hearing, there is a point of diminishing return regarding price/quality for boat speakers that will be heard "out in the open."

check out WWW.polyplanar.com saw it in a magazine they make marine speakers.
If really good sound is important you can't go wrong with Bose. I just installed a pair of Bose 131's and a pair of Bose 151's in my boat this fall. Whoa... The guys are right, a boat will need fairly high volume compared to any other installation to overcome the open air and engine noise. That's assuming you're listening while you're running.
