First, thanks for the replys on a previous post about Suzuki motors. But here is my dilemma. I want to go with a Lund 1700 Angler tiller rated for 80hp. (The 1800 Pro-V is a little steep) Suzuki goes from 70 to 90 in one jump. Yamaha has 75 to 90. The dealer, with the Yamahas, also has 80hp but claims them to be the exact motor as the 75, '02 had 80 '03 has 75. Which is another question, is there a true horse power difference? The dealer called the rep but got no reply as of late yesterday.
Back to the original question. What, if any, preformance loss will I have with the 70 Suzuki versus the 75-80 Yamaha? What will be the difference in top end? What will they troll down to? I really like the Suzuki with the EFI. I can get an '02 70hp for a lesser price, which is nice, but this will be THE boat for me so I want to do it right ONCE.
Thanks in advance, Swede

I bought the 1700 angler tiller last spring, have a 4 stroke yamaha on it. It trolls down to 1.8-2.0 mph with myself in the boat.Have a maxum 74 lb thrust 24volt for slower presentations and works fine.
Handles well and get up to about 35mph on the water with the original prop. Gets up and goes very nicely planning out quickly. Would not want to go any faster due to control with tiller.

Is that with the 80hp? Is that GPS or locator speed? Trolling speed is that GPS or locator? Sounds just like the rig I'm looking at including the Vantage. Thanks for the reply. Swede

Your in the same position that I was three years ago with an Alaskan 20 ft tiller. I tossed and turned many a night until I made my decision.
Coming from three previous Yamaha motors it was tough even considering the Suzuki until I read all that I could about the awards and positive things that were said about it. 6 year warranty too!
I choose the 70 Four Stroke Suk. It had MORE than enough power to push my Alaskan. Even with three and four big guys in it.
What I liked about it was the light weight and the fuel injection vs the 60 lbs heavier weight + carbs. I've had a professional writer/fisherman in the boat and comment that this was the nicest tiller rig that he's ever fished in. I guess part of that was because of the room in the boat.
Anyway you will not be disappointed with the Suz. In fact you'll be glad you bought one.
Good luck! Both are nice motors but I like fuel injection better.

I bought a lund 1700 pro angler and put a 60hp 4 stroke suzuki on it.
I get 34.7 mph on the GPS with 2 big guys and a full gas tank. I have run the motor for 2 years and have had no problems, I put about 200 hrs per year on the motor. Good luck
I JUST BOUGHT THE SAME RIG.
BUT MY CHOICES WERE MERC. OR HONDA.
THE MERC. IS A YAMAHA I BELIEVE.
THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT HE HAD
PROBLEMS WITH THE MERC-YAM 4 STROKES
THAT WERE CARB. MOTORS. (STARTING)
THE HONDA IS ALSO A CARB. BUT I AM VERY
HAPPY WITH IT.
43MPH ON LOCATOR WITH 1 PERSON AND
HALF TANK OF GAS.
1.8MPH TROLLING.

70 vs 75 - 80 HP, BFD. Suzi vs others, get the Suzi. You should be able to troll even slower than the prior posts in this thread. When you buy your spare prop, get them in different pitches. That way you can put the prop on that gives you either higher top end speed or slower trolling speed as you might want.
As an example, I have a Lund 1675 ProSport with a 115-HP Suzuki 4-stk that I run at 6000' altitude. With my 17 pitch prop my speed ranges are ~37 / 1.5 mph. With a 21 pitch prop, I'm about ~42 / 1.8 mph. Again, at altitude.
EsoxProSport probably can give you midwest altitude speeds for a similar rig.

I had an '99 Evin 4-stroke which was then made by Susuki and it was an outstanding motor. The EFI I believe makes a big difference trolling at slower speeds because the computer automatically adjusts to the necessary amount of fuel needed and it also works better in colder weather. I now have the Yam F115 which is also EFI and I do not believe I would ever purchase a carb model. If you look at the specs on the different motors there is very little difference between different groups of motors ex. 9.9 vs. 15 or a 40 vs. 50; the result is just a couple of MPH fast due to slight setting adjustments. I would potentially give up at most 3 mph to gain a better performing motor-it is hard to find anything negative that has been discussed on this web site about either but especially the Susuki. good luck
