After my first weekend with the Optima batteries I hope there is something wrong with my AP.

First day, they seemd to run like a champ. Fished from 10-6 with almost a constant on at about 3-4 on a 65AP. The AP battery meter read low at the end of the day, not re-charge. I have run it many times for a few hours on re-charge.

Plugged the charger in at 7 that night and unpluuged it at about 7:30 the next morning. The Guest 2635 charger showed all four batteries having a full charge. Went out and didn't start using it until 9;30. Fished until 6 again using it on 3-4 all day. My AP head kept doing the turn to one side or the other (Steve Fellegy I would like your buddies info at Minn Kota) and the motor still showed low on the charge and not re-charge. I don't think my AP problem is a battery problem, but unfortunately another MK nightmare. For what that motor does, I couldn't fish without it. Living in the middle of New Mexico has its drawbacks, no MK service centers.

BTW anyone that has the Lund battery meters in the front, they are worthless. Don't know why Lund puts them in, they just add a bunch of wires where you don't need any extra. If I am wrong, someone please tell me how they are supposed to work or what I am doing wrong. Had to vent on that again.

Optima Batteries :

Do they last longer? They don't seem to.
Are they lighter? Yes, I actually picked up about 1.5 MPH on the GPS top end with the Optimas.
Do they look more stable? Yes
Will my clothes and carpet be ruined from them leaking? NO

This is my first impression and if I had to do it again tomorrow I am not sure I would drop the very healthy amount of money. Other batteries have served me well and cost about a 1/3.

Lastly, the 3rd DM battery was not in until late Friday so I put the Exide cranker back in for that and ran the Blue Top as my accessories battery in the back. This did not impress me at all. The Optima Cranking Blue Top must not be designed to have any kind of reserve capacity. With a full charge both days, I started out with good volts and by the end of the days I was seeing 10.4-10.3 on the output. Danger zone for some electronics. I ran a livewell (very little to keep the suckers alive), Garmin 162 GPS, Genetron GT 9, Zercom 160, and 12v Outlet for phone charger. This is hopefully only because the Blue Top Optima M is a cranking and not a DM deep cycle. For those of you considering one battery for your cranker, don't get the Blue M series, make sure you get the Blue DM so your accessories will have some depth. You may not have anough cranking power if you have a big motor though, not sure on this one.

I will update next weekend after a reconfiguration of the cranking/deep cycle and let everyone know how they worked.

All of this is my first impression and in no way a definitive conclusion on the Optimas. I may have some other electrical stuff going on and will need to do some more work.

Hmmm, my feeling is that it has something to do with the AP. Give me a call when you get a chance, I want to see how and to what battery you have everything hooked up (i.e. livewells, GPS and Genetron, etc). Brian, there was a thread a while back about AP units going crazy. I don't recall the resolution but there were tons of opinions, everything from prop balance to circuit boards. Give me a cable drive or give me death :-).

Best Regards,

FJH

It would be death for me without it. Covering the water and being able to adjust speed presentation 1/10th mph at a time until you find what they like SEEMS to be important this time of year. Kicker throttle is terrible for fine tuning speed.

I've seen the posts on the AP (ALL of them) Fellegy has a guy inside. Hope to get his name.

Right now, the 1000M is my accessories battery (because the other D900M wasn't in yet) and I have everything except my trolling motor running to it. I have my big motor cable running to the Exide (soon to be 1000M) and also what I am 99% sure is my auto bilge wires.

The trolling motor has 2 D900M hooked up and the battery meter cables with the charger wires.

Let me know what you think. I have read most of the posts and will be checking the wires in the head (had a ram mount holding the thing from day 1), and all the wires in the big cord. The foot pedal lost a screw early on, but I never thought much of it because I don't really use it. Looking at that too with Kevin (Electrical Engineer) tomorrow. He has all the fancy gadgets and is super good with all that stuff.

Thanks,

Brian,

Here's how I have my stuff hooked up (I have four batteries on board):

Trolling motor batteries (group 27 size): 24v trolling motor only.

Starting Battery (group 27 size): Main engine, Genetron, bow BottomLine, console BottomLine/GPS, auto bilge switch wire.

Accessory Battery (group 31 size): My main fuse buss wires are attached to this battery. This covers my livewells/baitwells, interior lights, bilge, am/fm cassette, running lights, 12v power outlet, etc.

I found that I had a problem with my finders (low voltage shut-down problems) when the finders were attached to the same battery as the livewells. It seemed that later in a day of fishing (with the livewells cycling on/off all day), when the livewell would cycle on, the battery voltage would momentarily drop below the "safe" threshold and the finder would shut down. After making this wiring switch last year I've had zero problems. This isn't going to solve your AP issue, but it may help with the Genetron/finder issue.

Best Regards,

FJH

That sounds like a good start.

When you originally told me off the dual batts in back, I thought you meant everything.

I'll switch the GT9, Garmin, and Zercom over to the cranking and the rest to the spare DM batt.

We will see.

(I ran my livewells for maybe 30 minutes each day total)

Brian,

There is a MK repair service available in Farmington, NM.

No thanks, I'll ship it in before I drive north in winter.

Have you used them?

Mexico-I fished with a fellow in the RCL Champship that had rigged his kicker with an electric throttle adjustment switch.

He designed it himself. It was controlled off of a GM (car) window motor. Slick unit. He could adjust that puppy by a few rpms at a time.
The Switch he used was a rocker switch, He mounted on the dash.

I was impressed. So much so, that I thought after I wear some paint off my rig, I would get with him and get a set of plans.

Marble Eyes,

Please keep me in the loop.

That would be great to have. Right now I am using the trick I learned on Erie from my pro, pull the cowling off and adjust the screw. Only problem out here is that I have to adjust my speed by the direction and the direction may only last 15 minutes in a tight pattern.

Thanks,

Did you upgrade the TM wires by getting rid of the fuses and going with circuit breakers yet?

Mexico,
Hope you get things sorted out with your AP. I had one and had the same issue with the head doing its own infinite turn. It is a great feature however.

In regards to your batteries...thanks for the feedback. Just so you know, the Blue Top 34M is a cranking only battery, It has very high CA, but not built to have a great reserve capacity. It is probably advisable only to run a couple pieces of electronics off it and use it to start. If you want a dual purpose battery that has a higher cranking amperage, Optima now has a Group 31 (bigger than Group 27) size battery. It is the Optima Blue Top 31DM. By the way, these batteries also fit in a Group 27 box, so you can actually fit these in most 27 applications and get even more reserve capacity for your trolling motor.

In terms of your mention of Optimas lasting longer...you probably won't notice at first, but after 100-200 cycles you should notice that the batteries last longer per charge than traditional flat plate batteries.

Again, thanks for your honest feedback from the field. Good fishing to you in NM. I just got back from Little Bay de Noc in the UP where I'm certain it was colder than it is down by you.

Ryan

No, but I will be doing that next.

Ryan,

I'll put another post up after I change some stuff around.

After talking to FJH last night we decided to start by changing some of accesories over. From what you have said, I will just switch the cranking battery over to the big motor and try all of my accesories on the DM.

Fishing all winter without a lot of customer traffic allows me to experiment quite a bit while the fishing is slow.

Thanks,
