Just bought a new 2003 620 with 225 opti and need to know the best prop for top end performance? I've heard the 21p tempest plus but not sure. Thanks alot

The Tempest is the fastest prop Mercury makes, if you put a jackplate on, you might be able to turn a 23" pitch, which that combo will probably give you about 2 or 3 mph more on top end.

My 2002 225 has a 23" Tempest. I am happy with the overall performance. I had heard the 21 would over rev with that setup. I also realize that all boats, even from the same make, are different. You could start with one prop, and most dealers with give you another prop to try out.
Good luck,

My boat came with a 25 yamaha prop. I forgot it is a 225 yamaha v max. I had talked to alot of people that were running the 23 tempest.
Do you know if the tempest will fit the 225 yamaha?
I was having a hard time turning the 25 only 51RPM.

I ran 3 diff. ones on my 620/225 opti combo with jackplate. 21 tempest, good out of the hole and fair on top end, but would over rev often. 23 Tempest fair out of the hole and great on top end. I gained 2-5 mph depending on the amount of fuel onboard. Also ran and bought a 23pitch High 5, and love it. The top end speed is about the same as the 21 Tempest but it planes out instantly. Works great for pulling the kids on the tube, and leveled out great with 5 men in the back. If I could only have one it would be the 23 High 5.

I've been told from a very reliable source that my new V Max 225 HPDI (w/the high-speed gear case) on my new 620 will turn a 25 pitch Yami pro series or 25 Tempest, and will run like a raped ape.....even with a T9.9 kicker on the back..

The old Merc Opti 225 had to run a 21 Tempest, 23 was too much prop.

Getcha some - What do you mean by way to much prop for your 23p. Was the top end better or worse.

I dont think Id make that post until you have put youre money where your month is.Ive been in the business along time, and its not really possible for that rig with that motor to run that prop at proper RPMS.Bass rig maybe, but not a 600 series.

Could you please tell me your complete set up. I don't have a jackplate. I'm still not sure if I should get a 21 or 23 tempest. Thanks

This is easy,go to www.mercurymarine.com tell them what you have and they will tell you what you need.Or you could just ask for a prop guide, that has all of their props and alot of info. Remember life jackets float. You don't!!!

I'm not sure, the new 225 HPDI V Max is suppose to be the real deal.....I'll bet the shootout between tha Yamaha and the 225 HO Evinrude is a good race.

Everything I've been told about the 225 HPDI is low/mid range power and flat out-hold on tight top end speed, on any hull you strap it to..

A 204 cubic inch V MAX block versus the 185 ci block on the Optipop.... guess which one is faster??? not to mention the high speed gear case on the Yami with the low water pickups so the engine is perfect for jack plates, right from the factory....

I bet the Yami will spin a 25 pitch prop on a 620..... with the right starting and deep cycle batteries on board.

Mike,

I have a 2002, no jackplate, w/225 Opti(2002), running tempest 23p, get 5600 rpm's(right in middle of range), get 58/59 mph GPS. From what I've heard, this seems to be best set up w/out jackplate. I'm happy with hole shot and top end tournament loaded.
