HI there everyone, just want to take this time to introduce myself. MY name is Bryan and I am a college student at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. I am a novice muskie fisherman, meaning i love to fish for them, but also will fish for other species if the ski's are not turned on at the time. Here is my question...
I am starting to look for a new or very lightly used boat to get this summer. being that i am a college student i don't have ton's of money, so i'm kinda looking for the best bang for the buck. my limits are in the $5000-6000 range(boat motor and trailer) and don't need anything that is super special. for the most part i fish by myself or with one other person so a smaller size boat would do just fine. I have run across a boat that i can't find any info on and wondering if you guys have any experience with it. The brand it called "Northwood" boats. They are avaiable at a place called "Olympic Boat Centers". they seem like a decent boat with a few features for the money. Anyone had any experience with these or know of a boat that also a great boat for the money. Size is another thing that is huge to me. I go to Canada alot and some of the landings up there it is real hard to get anything bigger than 15ft. so that 14-15 foot range is preferred. thanks for any advice you guys can give me...tight lines

Northwoods = Sylvan. My first boat was a Northwoods 14 1/2 ft fish 'n fun with a 25 horse, console, livewell, etc. It was used when I bought it, but I think I paid around 3K for it (back in my college days).

It was a simple yet functional boat.

Good luck in your search.

My son has a 1675 Northwoods tiller. It is a great boat. It is deep enough for Canadian waters. It loads very easily.

I'd suggest looking into an Alumacraft Fisherman 145 or Lund Rebel 1440. If you want to get more $$$ numbers and boat info I go to one these shows coming up, a lot of good buys can be had.
Good Luck.

A used Lund 16' Rebel tiller X 25-40hp is an excellent bread and butter boat. Buy one at the right price and you'll be able to sell it in a couple years for darn near what you paid for it (provided you take care of it). If you can find a 1650 in your range - all the better. It's much more boat.

Rte 65 N of Fridley has a ton of dealers to check out. Rebels go pretty fast so check often.

Good luck with your search.

I'd say find a 10-14 year old 1775 Lund ProV tiller or something of that ilk that is in ok shape. In other words a really high quality boat but with some age and use on it. You'll have a great hull and a LOT of boat. Plus it's nice to have a bigger boat. Just an opinion. There are boats like that out there if you look past some faded paint and motor covers. Further, if you can get by a year or two Lund can redo that boat for $1-2,000 and it'll look brand new.

Todd - I'm on the Fisher Pro Staff, but that's my opinion regardless.

Yup, got her... feel that head shake!

Thanks for all the info guys...really appreciate it. anyone also had any luck with starcraft boats? they seem like a pretty decent boat, but the livewell on the 14 and 16 foot tiller models is about as big as my toilet. Thanks

Think about buying a used boat. Many fisherman are very careful with their boats and you can find a nice clean rig with many extras in your price range. The Musky Hunter board had a Lund Predator and the WC board has a Lund Explorer, both great boats. Good Luck! KAJ
