Im heading to Manitoulin island for 12 days of R&R with the buddies in a couple weeks. We want to take a charter boat out for a half day. I found 1 charter operating in the area, seems like a very nice gentleman. My problem is we can either go to Huron which would be about an hours drive to the marina from where we are. If we go here we can fish salmon and steelies. He also has a boat on the lake we are at for strictly lake trout.

Both charters are the same price $270 can. but he will pick us up right at the cottage if we want to go for lakers. I plan on fishing lakers on my own while here, but I really dont know the area that well. I am positive that the time I am here I will be able to get on lakers (a few locals have already offered to take me out). What would you do?

Tell him to have coffee and jelly doughnuts in hand, when he picks you up at the door! ;-)

Take the charter first and learn the area with him. It's worth the few bucks it will cost you after you split the cost with the others. This way you don't waste anytime learning where the fish are.

Have a great vacation..good luck to you and the others!

Go for the steelie and salmon trip. They are much better fighters and, if you're going to keep some to eat, have considerably less fat-soluble contaminates.

Lakers are OK, but they fight like you're hooked into a wet beach towel.

I'd do both, Why not? You only get one spin of the wheel, I never seen anyone dug up for being broke or in debt when they died...Just my 2 cents..

I'd drive the hour 12 days in a row. I'd much rather catch steelies and salmon than lakers. Early spring lakers shallow and on flies or light tackle are fun but at this time of year they are not nearly so spectacular as a jumping steelie or a 30 lb king making that line scream. If you would really prefer to spend most of your time at the local lake, take Juls advice and hire the guide there the first day, learn the ropes and you will have more success the rest of the week.

I would take the drive and go after the Salmon and Steelhead in a heartbeat! There is NO comparison to the fight you will get between the Salmon/Steelhead and the Lake Trout. Salmon and Steelhead are just a blast to catch! Not saying catching BIG Lake trout is not fun, just that the other option is MORE fun!!!!
