My family and I will be going to Leech Lake next week, staying in the Steamboat Bay area. We usually go in late July/Early August. How much different will it be a month earlier? Are the Walleye still in transition, or will they already be in their summer locations?

In order to make sure the kids get some action to keep them interested, I know we can have some luck with pike and bass in Steamboat Bay, but I would like for them to catch a few Walleye also. We also like to fish for Crappie, but I assume they have already scattered for the summer. Any advice would be appreciated.

Mike,

Steamboat Bay-Good area. In fact it is our choice every year. Althought I fish early and late season on that lake, I have done a few mid summer trips and the spots I fish early and late remain solid throughout the summer.

With the kids, the north side and the west shorline of Minnesota Island will provide some great pearch, crappie, northern and the bonus walleye. It is close to your cabin in the event you need to return quickly. There is a little hole on the North end of the Island that is fun in the AM. It is only about 12' deep but come up to 4' all around. The eyes like this spot and you will, too.

Another great spot is the "hole" at the southwest end of the Narrrows channel. This spot will hold good numbers of eyes and if you anchor and set your kids up with bobbers, you will stay busy. Mind you these are all "eaters" for the benifit of quantity vs size, but I know what trolling for the big ones is like with kids. The minnows/worms become more fun then the fishing.

If the kids can handle a long run, try out over by Mokey Reef. Depending on the winds, that spot can produce some great sizes. Locate the top of that rocky reef and move west into the deeper water and troll that ridge north and south. We have always done will with spinners or jigs. Gentle winds out of the West can make that a great fish. Heavy winds will kill the main lake unless you have a bigger boat and your kids can handle the ride.

The cresent shaped flats on the north side of Walker Bay (Just on the south side of the point that separates Steamboat and Walker Bays) is great in the late evening. Look for the weed line in 12'-15'/20'. The rock bass and pearch will bug/thrill you if you get too shallow. This area will be crowded during the weekend also.

Deep weed lines (15'-20')will be your best bet for the big ones at that time of year. Walker Bay is a short run for you and has plenty of those, especially over by the "Saucer". I have tons of GPS locations for that lake if you want them. Let me know.

Have fun and enjoy!

H2O man I also am interested in going to Leech for a 2 day trip just for fishing. If you would please send me your GPS points and maybe some tips for a successful trip. This will be my first on that lake. I printed what you have already written.
We fished Bemidji, Cass, and Mille Lacs the last 6 days. Cass was tough but the other two were great.
Reeds had a Fathers Day sale when we were passing through and I couldn't pass up a 6.5 ft Fenwick HMG med. for 50$. Rigged with it at Mille Lacs and landed a 27" what fun.
E-mail pitsenbg@charter.net Thanks.

I'm going to be on Leech after August 18th. Would love those GPS coordinates if you don't get so many requests that there is a traffic jam on your favorite spots. I'm also going to try muskies this year for the first time. Thanks.

I am trying to get the list of them off my LakeMaps listings and cannot locate the funtion that does that. I have e-mailed LakeMasters for that info and when I get it, I will send them over.
