I have a spare Vexilar FL8-SLT and a Lowrance X-45. In your opinion, which of these units would be the best to mount on the trolling motor?

I put my ice fishing flasher on my bow trolling motor last year and I am currently looking for a used LCD type(x-75/85) to replace it because I am not getting the use out of it I thought I would. The noise kind of bothers me with the flasher but mainly I have to many other things to deal with on a moving boat to have time to stare at the flasher. Therefore I miss the marks on it and I am not able to watch my bait like I can ice fishing. I turn it on occasionaly to check depth variation form stearn to bow but I just don't use it very much. Maybe that's because of my type of fishing? The sonar on my dash rotates towards the front so I'm back to using that exclusively even though the transducer is on the stearn. Having a picture that remains visible for me to glance at would be far more practical. That's been my experience. Let's see what the other guys have to say.

My choice by far is the vexilar flasher. It can depend somewhat on the type of structure you normally fish. I ride the breaks like river channels in the man made reservoirs. Right now my best pattern is vertical jigging in 25 to 30 foot brush on river channel breaks. I am revealing my senior citizen status when I indicate a preference for flashers (dont need a trenchcoat)..The wide band on my flasher tells me I am on a drop off. Thats where the W's are 80% of their lives.

Go w/ the LCD. Flashers are nice for watching real time action when sitting still but if you have other things to look at too while maneuvering the boat, you will miss a lot. W/ the LCD you will be able to see several seconds worth of history as well as what is happening right then.
Since you already have the units, why not try them both. After a month or so, you should know which one suits your style of fishing best.
