Just wonder if he caught that by accident fishing eyes. We used to catch big cats on the St Lawrence river mixed right in with the walleye. Cant imagine a walleye man wanting to catch those ugly things maybe more in line with a bass fisherman, LOL

LAST EDITED ON Jun-19-01 AT 04:50PM (CST)[p]Check out the rod's in the picture, sorta kinda BIG for a walleye rod, ya think?

Yes he was fishing for cats, he sent me the picture and said he was fishing cats, so that kinda shoots the accidental catch theory down.

Yes little buddy people do intentionally fish for cats, they are a great sportfish and a heck of a thrill on a hook and line.

I could'nt agree more, catfish are a awesome gamefish.Although I now live by Lake of the Woods and chase eyes most of the time,Igrew up along the Red River and cats are the first fish I ever caught.By far the most fun to catch, not the best eating in my opinion though.Mostly bank fish for them now, can't get myself to put my Ranger in the river. my two cents

I took out my longtime walleye fishing partner to Lockport (1st time there) last Thurs - he too was skeptical about these fish...I tell ya, after he caught 4, 2 of which pulled the boat around, he is hooked! Our 9 day walleye trip in July has now changed to a 7 day Walleye trip + 2 days catfishing!
Try it - It will bring a smile to your face!

Chrism I had that same experience with a hard core walleye/pro friend. Once he went toe to toe with a few sumo piggy cats he was hooked. He was very impressed by there stamina & there all out bulldog strength.

He has since made plans for several trips on the US Red this season, and a couple more late fall walleye/cat trips up on the lake end of the Red.

And what's with all this UGLY stuff? Cats are not ugly, they are beautiful!

Right EH Chrism?

NICE piggy Johnnie!~!

Was south on the mighty missouri river two weeks ago with my daughter and her boyfriend. her boyfriend tied into a mini-piggie while chasing eyes with 6# test so i had his drag set light.

By the end of the battle boyfriend was excited and anxious(what is it) and tired of fighting this guy and the cat was bushed too when released. What a fight, best one I have witnessed all spring and it was just 4.2# go piggie!!

Nice post BE

Would like info on fishing the U.S. Red in a 17' boat. Such as where to launch, best area to fish in July, dangers to watch out for and general fishing info. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

I would need to know what region of the Red you were looking to fish before I could be of much help. Narrow it down a bit and I will try to help if I can.
