Noticing alot of posts regarding blown powerheads and cylinders etc. The common thread seems to me that most owners run their rigs at WOT. Were high performance outboards designed to be run at WOT when travelling from a to b? You wouldn't drive your car or aircraft that way, should a boat be any different?

Engine problems are usually a combination of things: running too hard, poor fuel air mixture, temp, bad spark, or just plain luck. I had a problem once on a 200 merc. I was running under WOT but it was TEN below zero, I had not changed my spark plugs, or cleaned my carbs in a long time, and even though I was not at WOT I was close to it running at about 85-90 mph on the river in my bassboat. I threw a rod out one side and the piston out the other. In short keep up on matenence and run smart. Most of all don't fish on the river when it is below 20degrees it is not worth it.

Motors are only as kind to you as you are to them for sure, if my boats sat for more than a week or two, I run it through the break in steps 3minutes idling then run it up to full throttle and plane as gradually as possible, and idle back down. Varying speed is best for them. Let motor run idle and cool after a good run also. Hot plugs condense water one devil I perfer not to dance with. High performance or not.
