View Full Version : 4-stroke questions
1. Called the Lund engineering dept. Asked about my 1890 with a 200efi on it. Wanted to know if putting a 9.9 kicker 4-stroke on this rig would be detrimental structurally and floatation wise. Their response was that this boat was never designed to take a 130# kicker and they recommended against it. What gives? I see posts where owners with smaller rigs (1775's) have kickers. 2.Regardless, can't decide btwn a 6 or 9.9 4-strke. Like the 6 because it's only 58# but as a single cylinder tends to vibrate more than a 9.9. What do you think? 3. When travelling from a to b, is the kicker secure enough in its bracket to take a pounding from rough water/wakes? or should I be looking at some aftermarket bracket to secure it in its stored position? Thanks for tolerating the long wind.

The total weight on the transom can be a problem. A relative once owned a 1775 Pro Vee with a 150hp Ficht OMC and a 4-stroke kicker. He couldn't backtroll in any kind of chop without slopping so much water into the splashwell the big scuppers couldn't drain it fast enough. He had to add splashguards.
The boat he had the year before had an OMC 115 and kicker. The lesser weight hadn't had a problem backtrolling.
On the small to mid-sized lakes he was most often fishing, the larger engine wasn't much advantage. The next boat was a bigger Lund. He's up to a 19' Pro Vee this year.

You might check out a twin cylinder 8 hp. Got an Evinrude which weighs about 78 lbs. I flip it to it's side and through a bungee cord on it to the transom hook on that side. No problems thus far.

Look at a Yamaha T-8 four stroke. Weighs 87# and has it's own power tilt included. I absolutely love the way mine runs and handles the waves.

Two years ago I had an 1800 Pro-V with a 150 Optimax. I had a 9.9 Mercury 4 stroke kicker on this boat, and didn't have any problems. I ran this boat hard on Lake of the Woods, and when I traded it in, my dealer used it as his tournament boat, including on Mille Lacs without an aftermarket kicker lift, and it handled rough water fine. I did put a merc kicker lift on my new boat though, and I love having the power tilt. Marty
Lund's response seems strange since a quick look at their web site seems to show 4 stroke kickers on just about everything.

What did you pay for your T8? I'm shopping for a kicker and the T8 is mighty impressive.
Does it come standard with electric start as well?
