I am going up north to Voyageurs Natl Park in Minnesota in a couple of days, I was wondering what was the best bait and tackle to use when fishing from the bank. They said that walleye is the main thing that you catch up there. I've never done any walleye fishing, Im from texas and we do trout and redfish fishing. If there are any immediate tips and suggestions. Please help.

I dont do alot of bank fishing but your lighter redfish rods and reels should be fine remember to use lighter line for casting distance. Bring something six to eight feet long. I did fish in the boundry waters a couple of years ago and I was way over prepared. The rod I used the most waas a GLoomis Steelhead rod (1026) with six pound line, a small split shot and a #6 hook. Live bait is hard to keep while camping keep that in mind. Tube jigs rapalas and other tackle will work just fine. Most of the people fish for walleyes so most people catch walleyes. Northern pike' smallmouthbass, largemouth bass, and muskies are also abundent in that area, along with Lake Trout and other kinds of fish. Try to key on just a few things a short trip can be made much shorter by doing too much. Hope this helps.

I would take a pair of waders along, or at least some cutoffs and wading shoes of some type. Carry a small butt bag of some type to carry a few extra lures. It will give you much more freedom to get around. It is great country up there. Have fun!

A pair of needle nose pliers will come in handy. Those pike and walleye have very toothy smiles.
From shore i like to toss Dare Devils and crank baits. You will surely get a few northern. Bobber fishing with minnows or crawlers will provide fish too.
I also recoomend a guide to take you fishing one day. You will catch a few fish and have a great "shore lunch". Make sure they serve shore lunch, most do up here.
One more thing - bring a jacket. I have friends in San Antonio that come up here (MN) in the summer. they shiver uncontrollably when the temp gets below 75.:-) The evening temp may be in the 50's.
Have fun
