View Full Version : But the fish were on a bite !!

I ran across two of the most insane walleye fisherman that I've ever met last Monday. We were fishing Big Round in Polk Co., Wisconsin early in the morning. We had delayed launching an hour while a thunderstorm cleared out. It was still raining and the wind was moderate but no lightning. Another boat (bass boat) launched just ahead of us with two fishermen. We elected to fish near the launch area since the skies were still black. After about 20 minutes, the weather started getting worse and we saw a shot of lightning. My boat was headed toward the dock before we heard the thunder. By the time we loaded the boat, the wind had doubled and we had severe lightning. Rather than wait it out in the parking lot, we returned to Balsam Lake, had breakfast, and a short nap. The skies started to clear again so we headed back to the lake. While still several miles away, we noticed the ground was covered with leaves and debries. When we pulled into the launch, we spotted the tow vehicle for the bass boat with it's windows and body shattered by hail....we picked up golf-ball size hail still on the ground over two hours after it had fallen. By now we were very worried about the two fisherman and started searching the lake with hopes we wouldn't find bodies floating. Ten minutes later we found them fishing on the far side of the lake. They said they were fine but had bruises all over their bodies. One of them held up his plastic tackle box with a 3" hole punched out by a hail stone. We asked them why they didn't get off the lake when the storm hit and they replied...."the walleyes were biting"! We told them about their truck at the landing and they said it was too late to worry about it now and kept right on fishing.

All of this was the same day the tornado went just north of us and wiped out the town of Siren, killing several people and injuring many.

It makes you wonder just how stupid some fishermen can be.

PS...the truck had Wisconsin plates !!

The cheese causes behavior like that, it creates a fog in the brain. No other explanation for it!

True story:
2 friends of mine whom are die-hard ice fishermen (perch), entered the local ice fishing, perch derby.
They drove several miles out onto our local lake, and dropped the truck through on a pressure break.
The truck was hung up long enough for them to get out and even unload their gear from the back (Based on their experience of putting trucks through the ice in the past. They knew the truck was going to go.. but not fast....so, they salvaged their gear from the pick-up box.)
The truck then went down.
They fired up their power augers, drilled holes, and fished the derby, and hitched a ride back to the derby headquarters, when the derby time allotment ended.
They finished 3rd. They said the new structure they had provided near their holes probably attracted some fish.
As God is my witness, this is a true story!

I wouldn't do it, but they were doing what they wanted to be doing.

Who died and left you in charge? Lighten up and smell the roses, instead of dissing other folks.

And the orchestra played on. Well night trolling the Old Yacht club where the South Channel empties into Lake St Clair, with storms and a heavy rain a yacht of better than 100ft and 2 decks pulled out of the mooring, in the large glassed in bar 4-5 musicians in tuxs with One couple dancing, the only couple present There by the light of the lightning got my largest walleye of the year and a limit also got a wave from the dude in the tux!? He was proably tired or envious of me netting all those eyes?

Night time big river walleyes like heat lightning and we have not had much of it here in Michigan yet.
Not a legitimate report.

I see it every spring on Kelly's Island , six to eight footers ,wind chill of - 20 and the only trucks at the ramps parking lot are cheeseheads.I didn't think the Vikings made it that far inland , they must of sowed allot of seed in cheeseland . Tough bunch from what I have seen.

Of course the truck had Wisconsin plates. Where ealse would you find cheese eating, turpentine drinking fools. My friend always says that a chicken has a brain the size of a pea, but it is still smart enough to get out of the rain. What does that say about people from sconville?

Larry

Well Hans, it's like this.....that's exactly what we were afraid might of happened to them....DEAD !! It might well have been their choice but it sure wouldn't have been the choice of those expected to conduct a search with already overstressed police, fire, and other related departments. I'd also have to assume that their family and friends might not think too much of their choice either. Of all subjects, it's certainly not one to "lighten up" on !!!!! The guys were IDIOTS and deserve credit where due.

What were these guys doing in a BASS BOAT?!!!? They are walleye fishermen through and through. They might be nuts, but you got to admire their dedication!

Hans, These are the find of morons that ruin it for everyone. If people keep being this stupit and end up dying, the next thing you know the state will mandate some other dumb law to make it hard on everyone else. Like mantitory boat operators licenses. That is the new rumor going around in Minnesota. All of this is caused by a few idiots like these guys.

Hey cangl, heavy overcast,two/three foot waves,rain/marble sized hail, lightning on three sides, landed the biggest eye(just shy of 13#s) and the heavest stringer of the year,8.5 to 12.7 four over ten #s, only one other boat on the entire river, mounting them all to remember that day,

THESE GUYS. THAT WAS A SCARY BUT FUNNY STORY.

Well stated. Too often folks seem to forget that the stupidity of various types can and does cost all of us. Interview the Coast Guard at any Lake Michigan station. They have stories of horrific stupidity that many would find hard to believe -- yet, these things do happen and they affect us all.

You can't legislate against stupidity, and the sooner the stupid folks kill them self off, the better for the rest of us. The gene-pool needs some chlorine. I'm sick and tired of control freaks telling other people how to run their lives.

A few years back while fishing with a couple of friends we noticed a storm brewing of in the distance. It was still sunny when I noticed that my graphite rod was making a crackling sound.I also seen,no lie,an arc jump from the rod blank to the rod guide.I mentioned to one of the guys it was time to get the heck out of there and back to the access. He told me I worry to much about lightning. At the time he was making that statement you could see his hair sticking straight out the sides of his hat,he also made a cast and his line hovered above the water for a moment before falling to the waters surface. We barely made it back in time to witness a powerfull thunderstorm rolling over Sakakawea.Strange stuff I dont care to witness again. Can anyone else relate?

Come on, Hans. Using your notion we'd also allow fools to speed down residential streets, go the wrong way on one-way streets, run snowmobiles through the cities, and all sort of other libertarian "freedoms." A stop sign is an infrigement on "freedom," but nonetheless a necessary one.

Nice Fish!
06-23-2001, 11:55 AM
But where is the rest of the stringer of 10lb plus fish that you kept that night and are going to mount? Sounds like you fish more than most people work. Is this your living? Must be nice.

ToughGuy uses an emergency room to check for bruises?? Whats next, ToughGuy uses fingernail file? ToughGuy getting soft?

Tough Guy

Yea maybe Tough Guy getting a little soft over the years. Tough Guy have no more room in skull for brain to swell. Tough Guy have more concussions than Troy Aikman quarterback. If fish biting, Tough Guy stay through any weather. Besides, Tough Guy enjoy company of Nurse Ratchet in ER.

From my experience I find walleye's will feed heavy before a storm, but after after the thunder blast's them a few times it seems they shut down, why risk it.Don't ask how I know this I MIGHT GIVE YOU THE STUPID ANSWER.Jigging the detriot river with 16 walleye's boated in under an hour, a tranformer on fire in detriot the local t.v. station antenea on fire and me and the coast guard on the water, the only difference is they had to be.That was my last bit of research on the effect's of lightning storm's on walleye's.Also I don't blame anyone for staying out,it's your life, if the boat's on fire, fish thru it don't call for help and put someone else at risk. fish on

Hans,
It sounds like you need some anger management counseling. I am just the right psychologist to provide this counseling. Take it easy man.

If you can hear thunder (even a slight rumble), you can be struck by lightning. NOAA sez that a lightning strike can occur instantaneously up to 10 miles away from a previous lightning strike

Dear Doctor,

I am so angry that the walleye ignore my lures. Please
counsel them severely!

Thank you very much.

In one post he states "wake up and smell the roses and quit dissing other folks". In another post he states "that as soon as the stupid people kill themselves off the better the rest of us will be. The gene pool needs some chlorine". Wow, talk about being all over the map! Yes, there is a need for some chlorine all right. I think your mother needs to grab you by the ear and make you stand in the corner! LOL

We see a lot of dumb things every year. It is amazing that more people do not get killed. I feel for other fisherman who are put in the predicament of having to rescue guys who get into trouble because of their recklessness.
....I was going out a few years back icefishing and we stopped about half way out near a 200m section of open water. Temperature outside was about 0 F. A snowmachine going wide open was heading for the open water.......We try and wave the guy off. He hits the open water and makes it to the other side. We breath a sigh of relief..........A few minutes go by and the same machine comes back and goes across the open water again.
My partner is a retired OPP Seargent....I ask him.....Did you see that.......He answers...I didn't see a thing.

HUMOR IMPAIRED INDUHVIDUALS SHOULD AVOID READING THIS MESSAGE.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The world is methodically being dumbed down by government efforts to protect us from stupid people.

Stupid drivers don't recognize the dangers of speed, so they drive too fast and kill themselves. The government regulates speed, so now more stupid people survive.

Stupid pedestrians don't know enough to not step out into a busy street, so they get injured and killed trying to cross the street. The government makes laws giving them the right-of-way, so now more stupid people survive.

Stupid parents don't recognize the value of childhood innoculations. The government makes them vaccinate their children before entering school, so now more stupid people survive.

Stupid fishermen don't know enough to stay off the lake during electrical weather, so they get fried in their own juice. Some folks would pass laws and regulations about when you are required to come off the lake, and more stupid people would survive.

In the ways of Mother Nature, stupidity was kept in check because stupid people generally didn't survive to breeding age, thus our species tended to get smarter over time.

But stupidity begets stupidity, so we are being overwhelmed by a tsunami of stupidity. The tsunami is triggered by the government protection of stupid people, which allows them to survive to reproduce.

I got a computer and all my schooling paid for. I was not smart enough to do it on my own. I got my girl friend pregnant (twice), went on welfare, got reeducated, nice house, rent geared to income, partied for years.Got my education when I was in jail for selling drugs. I work now for a goverment agency working with other stupid people. They tell me I'm a perfect model of the system working. LOL
