I know this is off the main topic, but I just bought a new Springer Spaniel and cannot figure out what to name her.
What is the best name you've ever heard for a dog?

Study her for personality traits. Look into her eyes. If she's bold, she needs a strong name - likewise if she's a bit reserved.
Or you can name her after something that is special to you. We named one of our dogs after a small, remote town out west. No need to rush in naming her. I'm not sure why, but the name
"Cricket" came to me while typing this. Have fun with naming her!
(p.s. Be sure to put all your good shoes away - puppies love to chew. Keep the remote control up high too!)

I had an ESS and his name was Spiked Moon Pie. It will work for a female as well. Best ##### bird dog there ever was!
Email me to talk dogs and I can point you in the direction of some of the best trainers in the US.

A buddy of mine had a lab/retriever mix that he named "Sheena". I always thought that was a neat name, and it's distinct and easy to pronounce for voice commands.

I have a Springer Spaniel. She is a great dog but there are days when she gets really annoying with some of her little nervous habits. At those times, the only name that comes to mind is the one used by Steve Martin in the movie "The Jerk" and that is "$hithead".
All joking aside, use a short strong name that is easily heard while calling him/her. As mentioned above, look at her traits and find something appropriate. I would advise against $hithead though! :)
I have a male springer and hid name is BO.He loves fishing and loves the water,Great companion and never complains, lol.Good luck with your springer im sure you'll love it!!!!Kdog

I've got an 8 year old male who has as much energy as he did when he was 2. I let the kids conribute to the naming when we got him at 10 weeks old. They came up with Buster. You need to pick a name that is short, with a sound that can carry in the prairie winds - usually something with some 'hard' consanants like 'k's, 'b's, 't's...
For a female, name it after an old girlfriend. Wonder what the wife may think of that?
Have fun with the new pup.

Back in college we had a Dachsund we called Kilo. I think it was a good dog. Don't remember much of that era.
My pups (both female sisters about 10 months old) have a bit of husky in them (husky, golden, lab mix) and one is named Blue, because she has a blue eye, and the other is named Rudy -after my Dad's first outboard motor! :)
Rudy was the biggest female of the litter, and she is rude at times... hehe... Fits her great!
Blue is the black one, and Rudy is the yellow.

I had a great fishing buddy for almost 12 years, a Basset hound who's name was "Sir Elmer Fudd The First", I just called him Mr.Fudd.
His girl friend was named Maggie May Margarita (another Basset hound), they had 42 kids together.
There are lots of little Fuddlings sniffing around the Dakota's with names like "Low Boy", "Daisy Duke Fudd", and "Benjamin Franklin Fudd".
Sure do miss old Fudd!

I have 2 wonderful Labs: Yellow (almost pure white) male named Dakota (which is Indian for friend)
Chocolate female named Autumn (have you ever seen an autumn colored crayon)
They are excellent dogs and this next season will take turns bringing in ducks and geese for me & my friends. I hope Autumn will let little bro help anyway (LOL)
Regardless what you name your dog spend as much time with her as you possibly can training them or take them some where that they will receive extensive training. There is nothing more pleasing to watch than a well trained dog. Good luck & have fun with her.

I am a Springer man. I have owned 8...usually 2 at a time. (I have 2 now.) I birds hunt a whole lot and I always own female Springers.
The best one I ever had, my oldest daughter named Tess.
Love that name, brings back great memories of the best hunter I ever had.
I vote for "Tess"

LAST EDITED ON Jun-22-01 AT 07:56PM (CST)[p]Like T-Mac I'm a springer fanatic. Have ran them in field trials for the past 13 years. Best dog I've ever had we called Maddie, short for Madison's Hunting Fantasy. After a hunt at Lac Qui Parle when she retrieved 37 geese for over 30 hunters through 2 inches of ice, I had a guy offer me $7,000 for her. Good luck with your dog. Springers are the best!!!!!!!!!

When in college, I named my djog "Dammit." It was really convenient. My present dog is a spaniel of both kinds. Since he is a bird dog (both points and retrieves)and lives in a Norske household, his name is "Gunnar."

cisco
06-23-2001, 02:02 PM
Whatever you do, don't name it something that has the same sounds as common commands -- for example, cisco would not do because of the "sis" sound that is close to "sit."
I've got a spotted critter, an English pointer, that does very well with the name Freckles. It suits her. Nothing particularly creative, but functional.

Thought it was unique....guess not, huh?

FUNNIEST NAME I EVER HEARD FOR A DOG WAS "HEY-YOU", ESPECIALLY WHEN BEING CALLED, SUCH AS "HEY-YOU, COME HERE" OR "HEY-YOU, GET YOUR _SS OVER HERE". OR EVEN "HEY-YOU, GET THE HEL_ OUT OF THERE"!! BOUND TO GET A RESPONSE, WHETHER IT'S FROM THE DOG OR NOT.
Never name a dog any name you don't want to be yelling out in the middle of the street, wearing your pajamas, at 3 in the morning.
Also stay away from names that are close to the commands. (stay, sit, come etc.)

Have owned six springers over my liftime, all liver and white and all female. The last one was carried lots of liver flecks in the white and my wife named it Calico. That name was soon shortend to Cally. Shot hundreds of pheasants over her and she lived in the house with us like a member of the family. Died this year from a blood desease. We both bawled like babies. Havn't worked up the courage for another one yet bur expect I will.

Call her Jerry--you know, Jerry...Springer...Spaniel. Okay, so that's not funny!
This is an English breed, right? How about Guinevere, after King Arthur's babe? My parents had a Rottweiler named Guinevere. My nephew couldn't say it right when he was real little. It always came out sounding like "Gwine" instead of "Gwen". So my Dad called her "the Gwine Dog".
I went with a heroic German name for my Rottweiler--Manfred, after Manfred von Richtofen, the Red Baron. He's more like Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog from the old "Tom Terrific" cartoon they showed on "Captain Kangaroo" when I was a kid.

I had an English Springer, called her "TOOTS".
One syllable names are the best.
If you plan on using her for hunting, it is important that her name be one syllable for commands. I used my Springer strictly for hunting (plus companionship) and called him Ben. However, his championship paper name was "Jack and Ed's Big Ben.

I have never had the privilege to name a female springer. But I would suggest 'James Lady Diana'. You could shorten it to Lady or Di.
Our current springer is William's Sir Elliott. El is his working name. The previous one was 'Kristi Lou's Buddy Duke'. Duke was his working name. Definitely fitting for English Royalty. I miss Duke daily, every man is entitled to one great hunting dog, and Duke was mine.
My uncle's best female springer was named Frank.
My favorite name for a hunting dog is Jake. Jake is used in several songs referring to dogs. My favorite song line referring to a dog is 'I would go hunting with you Jake, but I rather go chasing women' :}
Enjoy the process, hopefully you have that one great dog.

I have a chocolate lab named Walker
Wall-nut

How about Wall-nut? :-)
My son named his black lab, Sady . Her name was Lady when we got her and as we don't care for that name but wanting to stay close to that sound for her we came up with Sady . It will also be a sad day when she goes to the bigger hunting grounds . Hopefully a lot of years from now . Good luck and have fun with the new pup

I had a pair of springers a number of years back, they were Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie was one of the hardest hunting dogs I have ever seen, but gentle as a lamb too. She retrieved many live birds or broken wing birds and didn't draw a feather. Once in a field trial she caught a quail on the ground, retrieved it to me and I gave it back to the bird planters and it was used later in the day! She was a great baby sitter as well. She watched over my 2 sons when they were just babys like they were her own pups. I lost her to cancer after only 9 years.
She will always have a place in my heart.
So I would have to say name her Bonnie.
Have fun with your new pup!

I named our cat "Loomis", and my wife named our lab "Mosey". People "in-the-know" get a kick out of my cat's name.
Both names shorten up quite nicely too (Moe and Lou).
